Default my rims oxidized...

hi,

My chrome Touring rims had oxidized due to the salt in Lake Tahoe.

Is there any way to fix this? how much is it to re-chrome the rims?

attached is a pic of the oxidized rim

thanks

Yep, have to be stripped and re-chromed. Salt on chrome is a big no-no. Prob cost you a couple hundred per wheel, so you may as well look into upgrading to aftermarket rims.

Is that really chrome? I have the same wheels it looks like the same color. My front wheels are also very dirty, but I believe it's from the ridiculous brake dust. It wont get clean no matter how hard I scrub. My back ones are very clean.

Are you sure its not just baked on brake dust? Try a chrome cleaner first. One of my old cars had chrome plated exhaust tips that looked like that and I just cleaned them.

Theoretically your back ones should look just as bad as your front ones. Is that true?

Sounds like brake dust to me if it is only on the front.

Can you wash away brake dust with water? I tried spraying water, but it doesn't come off.

They just look seriously dirty. I would take a rag and just go at it. Someone on here used a claybar and their rims became like brand new.

Salt will pit chrome if left on. Basic chrome job may not be that much, but these wheels will have to be stripped and prepped, which will raise the price considerably.

Try the cleaning methods mentioned above first, but if the chrome is pitted and decayed, it may not be worth those rims to fix, IMO.

The wheels do not look like optional chrome wheels to me. They look like OEM painted wheels.

My wife had a '00 volkswagen beetle with nasty looking painted front rims. The brake dust and dirt and heat causes a stain to set in that car wash, hand wash, elbow grease, nothing would remove it. Finally I tried a little Ka-Boom (a bathroom hard water stain remover). Worked like charm!

It's just brake dust. I had the same problem until I changed the front pads. Now I don't have the problem.

No, do not.

Acetone is unfriendly to a lot of types of materials. Specifically polymers and possibly even some rubbers.
