Question Which tires?

I need new tires. I've had these on for about 24,000 miles. They are Michelin Pilot Sports. Today I priced some more Michelin PS and I also priced some BF Goodrich G-Forces. I've been looking through a consumer reports magazine and neither of those is rated extremely high overall. The Pilot Sports are 4th and the G-Forces are 10th. I still have stock 18s, and was just wondering what you guys recommend, or which tires you are running and like? I don't track the car or anything, it's just my DD. Thanks for the advice.

From what I've read here, Pilot's seem to be pretty popular. I cant wait to get some for my ride, but new rims AND tires is just a huge kick in the nuts. Try a search for Pilot.

Don't know what G-Force you price/read about but do a search on the forum for the BFG KDW-2. I had them on my Evo 8 and now on my Z. I ordered a set, OEM sizes; 225/45/18 front & 245/45/18 rears for $764 shipped from DTD w/ free replacement certificates. I have them among a lot of other Z owners and love them!!!
Also there are two tread patterns; KDW-2, aka KDW-NT, or KDW aka Original/Old Tread.:
KDW-2 & KDW-NT = Same tire with same tread. the "2" stand for 2nd gen and the "NT" stands for New Tread but same tire & tread. lol

I want to say it was a Goodyear, however, I'm at work and don't have the magazine next to me Possibly the ones you have listed in your sig.

How do you figure out what's the widest tire that'll fit on a rim? I have the stock 6 spoke 18s w/ 225/45 up front and 245/45 in the rear and I was recommended to put wider tires on for more traction, and so I was just curious how do you know what width tire will fit on a rim?

The tire manufacture recommends the proper tire width for various size wheels.

Check out the Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S. Just mounted some on my Nismo rims. Look at the reviews on Tire Rack. Priced right too.

Here is a pic of my Z with the Pirelli's. 245/40/18 & 275/40/18's mounted on 8.5 and 9.5 " wide rims.

I would stick with Michelin Pilot Sport. I've got 15,000 miles on my PS2 and show little wear. Rims are 18" X 9" on all four corners with 245/40 Front and 265/40 Rear.

It depends on what type of performance you want. Maximume dry performance, Maximum Wet or best Wet and dry performance. I need the latter so I chose Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

These tires scored number 1 in both Car & Driver and Consumer reports most recent tests.

You cannot get OEM staggered sizing, so I have ordered 245/40/18 fronts and 255/40/18 rears from Tire Rack.

For my second pick I would go with Michelin PS2's. They cost more but have good all round performance. If all you need is dry performance, then check out the other tires in the C & D report.
I Hope this helps

Which rims do you have? I have the factory 18s (non-track) and have 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 currently. I was thinking about going w/ 245/40/18 and 255/40/18 if it'd work, I just wasn't sure.

Thanks for the info!

Tires are designed and tested for specific size wheels. During aggressive handling and in the event of a failure (blowout) the friction between the tire bead and wheel are the only thing holding the tire in place.

I also give a thumbs up for Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S: surprising performance for a tire rated M&S. Which means that categories such as max performance and all-season are pretty arbitrary.
