Default Tires for stock rims 18"

I have a perf model with the 18" wheels (6 spoke, not track wheels) and I am wondering what the widest tire for the rim would be. At this point I have no interest in changing wheels, but I am thinking of going with a wider tire. I would like to keep the overall diameter the same and just get a bigger contact patch.

The ONLY thing I don't like about the car is the narrow tires... now this is caused, in part, by having a tire that has a small contact patch for the tire size (the tire is very rounded to the contact patch rather than coming down 'square'). I would guess that you could get about an additional 1/2" of contact by just keeping the tire size the same and getting a different brand.

I would love to hear suggestions... and please tell me if you are just guessing, or if you (or someone you know) has tried the combo.

Thanks!
Jeff

A lot of people are saying that 235/40(5)/18 F and 255/40(5)/18 R are the best combination for the "Touring Rims". Some people though have put on 245/35/18 F and 275/35/18 R on their rims, which is beyond the specs for 8" rims.

Checked out the previous thread but nobody posted pics of the 235 / 255 / 40 combo. I'd be interested in seeing side shots to get an idea of how it fills the wheel well. Anyone have this handy? Thanks in advance.
