First off, let me say that I have searched the forums for my answer. Well, let's just say that the search results are vague. I went to the local Nissan dealer and I saw an '06 with 20" Foose Lusso wheels on it. So, if Nissan is putting aftermarket wheels on the Z, there has to be some way they disabled the TPS. If they didn't disable the TPS, what are they doing? I asked the sales rep this and of course he doesn't know. So, what's the bottom line here? Can we disable this junk TPS system or not?

 

I dont think you can But i would love to get rid of the light in my gauge and alwasy having PSI flashing on the on board. But some people actuallr strap the sensor to the wheel

 

If Nissan is putting aftermarket wheels on your Z and they don't transfer the sensors from the old wheels to the new ones, they WON'T be doing anything to disable the TPS system. You'll get the "--"/"--" display for the pressure and if you're unlucky, you'll get the occasional warning beep for low pressure and the (!) will light up.

Not sure why you consider it "junk", for a lot of people, it's a life saver. The most common cause of tire failure is underinflation.

 

because i have driven cars without a TPS system for 16 years, and I know how to read a tire pressure gauge.

 

Kinda like the internet, we lived without it for years but once we used it we cant live without it!

Man, at the price of tires for the Z I like being able to see tire pressure at the flick of a switch.

 

i guess i would like it better if it didn't go off all the time in the winter.

 

Uh... it's trying to tell you something. In the winter, your tire pressures will be lower bn/c of the lower temps and you need to add air. Your tires will last much longer if you keep them properly inflated; listen to the TPS... it knows all.

 

The TPS is great. By 2008-2010, all cars are supposed to be equipped with this type of system.

 

yeah, i understand how cold weather and air pressure works. it just got annoying seeing it flash every morning. but, i got them transfered over to my new wheels today anyway. thanks for all the input.

 

i just put the sensors in my spare tire, haven't any lights flash yet.

 

So, how do you put 4 sensors in your spare?

 

Ha, clever idea. Just break the bead of the spare, toss them in and air it up!

 

Are they just sitting in there or are they attached? what happens if you have to use it?

 

They're attached, if i have to use the spare then i use it how would that change anything? it just gives me the psi inside the spare.

I just figured if you had them laying in there and not attached it would be interesting when you drove with the spare on.

 

The short answer is no. You can not disable the system it is part of the ECU/CAN function that comes with your car which has TPS from the factory. I went through this by removing the TPS sensors in the wheels and disconnecting the receiver under the passenger dash. This will eliminate the flashing PSI in the gauge but will not eliminate the flat tire light on the dash panel.

The flat tire light is controlled by the ECU which is programmed for your model car and can not be set or changed with OBDII etc. The ECU would essentially need to be reprogrammed.
