Default Tire size question, inform the uninformed

hi i dont want to sound like an idiot but i have some volks and currently they have 245/35/19 and 275/35/19 on them buuuut i am not going to drop the car as i previously had a dropped car and hated scratching everywhere and the tire wear along with it... so my question is if i were to get 275/40/19, would that get rid of the nasty tire gap more? or thats not a good combo? thx

Not a good combo. I have my car lowered over an inch, and I never scrape anywhere. You could go with an even milder drop of 3/4" if you are more comfortable. But you won't have problems with scraping.

The only way to get rid of the gap is to lower the car.

The tire gap that you are talking about is the distance between the top of the tire and the edge of the fender?

Use one of the calculators above. What are the heights of the tires that you are considering?

even running 275/40 i think you will still have a fairly noticeable gap, because if you think about it, it's only a 5mm increase from what you have right now. you're still going to have to lower it to eliminate the large gap. some more knowledgeable members might wanna chime in, but i think it might be a little late right now!

car looks great btw! once you work it all out, it's gonna look mean

don't forget that if you get a larger profile tire, while you'll be reducing the 'tire gap', you'll also be raising your car...and depending on your front tire selection, VDC could become an issue (if you car about that...I don't b/c I always turn it off)

Technically wouldn't it be a 10mm increase since you are adding 5mm to the top and bottom of the tire? :P

Different size tires will alter the ride height of the car. This is not recommended. If you want to lower the car, do it properly.

Trust me, I was more skeptical of lowering the car than you might have imagined.

I thought I was going to bottom out everywhere.

It turns out if you're careful you will be fine. There is no need to drop more than 1" to eliminate wheel gap.

I'm pretty pleased with the looks AND performance of hotchkis springs... Also my tires show no signs of accelerated wear. You have to get an alignment (obviously) though.

ha yea that's a good point, thanks for pointing that out. i think it would be wiser to lower the car appropriately, rather than accomodating the car to the tires.
