hi, i just bought an 06 touring roadster, and i just filled my tires with nitrogen gas... but for some reason i couldnt sleep and check up on the internet about nitrogen gas.

what are the science behind it? and is it beneficial? ... or... did i waste 20 bucks to get it replaced with normal air to nitrogen? -_-

 

What??? I never heard of putting nitrogen gas into your tires. But i do keep an open mind on modding my Z.

yea... that's what i was told at the shop too...

but when u think about it.... nitrogen is smaller than oxygen... so shouldnt nitrogen diffuse faster than oxygen? ^__-

Yea thats right....they use nitrogen gas for aircraft tires also. Nitrogen gas is non-flammable is safer to use on aircraft.

Nitrogen gas is dry because of the extracting process.

Your tire pressure will not vary as much with the tire/ambient temperature because of the near 0% humidity.

It is better than compressed air. Most garages don't even have an inline dryer on their compressors. Making things worst.

 

it is supposed to get you better gas mileage also

I'm thinking of getting helium in my tires, should make it accelerate much quicker.

 

You wasted $20, but at least you're not hurting the car in any way. No harm done. And, now you can brag to people that even your air is expensive!

I think that nitrogen is larger than oxygen atoms. If I remember right atoms get smaller left to right and top to bottom on the periodic table hydrogen being the largest (and least dense) atom.

 

compressed air has water molecules which expand and contract with heat changes. nitrogen is not worth the money but if i had a choice and it was free, i would go with pure nitrogen. compressed air is mostly nitrogen anyways.

Actually it is a proven fact that it saves you money. Nitrogen is alot lighter than air and therefore reduces the rolling weight of your car.

Agree. Its the lack of water content that makes nitrogen unique. You could get similar results from aviators breathing oxygen.

But you still wasted $20.

 

Just curious, since nitrogen is lighter than air, does race cars use nitrogen to fill their tires?

 

nascar fills their cars with nitrogen. but tire pressure adjustments make a huge difference for them
