Default Tire Sizing Help

Looking into new tires in the next day or two and I want something a little different than that stock 265/45/18 rears and 245/45/18 fronts that are currently on my 18" touring wheels. Ive been reading a little but have come to no conclusion. Im planning on getting the BFG KDW2s and have herd people running a wide range of tire sizes for better performance and would just like some general input on the setup you have or have had experiance with. Pros and Cons of size setups would be helpfull too.

This is the range ive seen according to this thread: https://my350z.com/forum/wheels-and-tires/231823-03-track-model-wheel-question.html And i could be wrong but I thought that the Track and Touring wheels are the same dimension...

Sizes:

245/40 all around
245/40 front 255/40 rear
245/40 front 265/40 rear
255/40 front 265/40 rear

245/40 all around ---- Pointless. You have a RWD car not FWD or AWD
245/40 front 255/40 rear ---- Best application in this list
245/40 front 265/40 rear ---- Rears too wide
255/40 front 265/40 rear ---- Too wide on stock wheels. Not safe.

Those sizes aren't stock on any "Z" I know. 225/45/18 and 245/45/18 are stock on the standard 18s. With the 8.5" rear 18s you can run 245/40/18 in front and 265/40/18 in the back. You would retain the stagger, the built in understeer, and have a rear with more bite.

Do you have VDC? Avoid 245/40 all around.

I recommend OEM width + 20mm. No more. The rear tires should be 10mm taller than the front.

yes i have VDC, the 245/40 all around is pretty much shot.

Just like the first quote in this reply that says, stay away from 245/40 all around... DKBURA in that thread that you replied to me, says that he has tested 245/40 all around with VDC and has had no problems... Im just trying to figure out what is most logical.

It's not personal preference. Run 265s on a stock rear wheel and you will know why. Quite frankly it's considered an unsafe application.

I would run 235/40/18 front and 245/40/18 rear. Add one more size to the width and one size smaller for the sidewall. OE+0 sizing.

I agree, 265/40 is too wide for an 8" wheel. The tire mfgs. call out a minimum wheel width of 9" for a 265, but I have seen them on an 8.5" wheel, and there is no tire bulge. They will work fine, BUT, you will NOT want to go any wider on that wheel. the 20 millimeter increase represents a 3/4" an inch width increase over the stock tire. The 8.5" wheel is 1/2" wider than the previous stock 8" wheel that ran 245/40s, but could run 255s safely. So now were talking a .4" increase from the 255s, on a wheel that is .5" wider. They will fit and work just fine.

Any tire shop who is careless enough to put 265s on your stock rears is asking to get sued when you loose control and wreck your car. Oversize tires are not supported properly because the sidewalls of the tires are not re-enforced enough against wheel. If you corner hard enough you could roll the tire off the bead, but most likely you'll just loose control.

On the next set I will be going with a 265/40 and I suspect it will be just about perfect. This is with the BFG TA\KD by the way...
more ive read from the https://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=231823 thread...

and yet more confusion...

Well since you are having so much doubt regarding our advice, and I'm really not trying to be an a$$ about this, your best bet is just go and get whatever you want. If you want to go with 275s or whatever and the tire shop is actually stupid enough to install them on your stock wheels, then go with it. Run around town for awhile and see how your back end reacts. Once you realize what it does to your car, return them under the 30 day ride guarantee (most tire stores have this policy), then put the correct sizing back on. Problem solved.

I didn't say you were an a$$. I was covering myself since people around here tend to have a trigger finger for flaming and a nose for the negative.
