Default Help with a tire question please!!

Okay so I've searched and not found exactly what I need. I have an 04.5 Touring ZR with stock tires. Fronts were replaced by nissan within 5k mi due to feathering, but I need to get new ones this year on the rear. I am looking at getting some Mich pilot sports. My question is if I need to stay with the standard size in the rear if I am only changing the rear or if I can go wider with a 255 40 18 setup and be okay. So is it okay to change the rear without changing the front width at the same time is my question. I'm not a tire expert obviusly and could use any advise...thanks in advance!

When changing different tires on different axles, you want to keep the following as close as possible:

Tire: Bridgestone RE40 | Michelin PS2
245/45/18 | 255/40/18
Speed Rating: 160 AA | 220 AA
Tread Pattern: Classic Directional | Asymmetric A/S
Overall Diameter: 26 | 26.6
Rim width Recom: 8.0 |8.5 - 10
Stock 18" 03-04: 18 x 8

As you can see these 2 tires are not the same. Also, Michelin tires are generally thicker and bulkier on the sides making them wider. This is due to there rim guard and PAX system construction. Ride quality wise the Michelin will be much better than the RE40s. From spec point of view, you are a bit too wide for the manufacture suggested wheel width and you are going shorter. Your tire compounds and tread pattern are not the same either. The Bridgestones are sticker due to the low treadwear and pattern and the Michelins will handle wet weather better. Whenever you go pass the manufacture suggested tire width on the wheels you'll start to get the overhang effect. So my point is, you are not matching the best two tires together. But, after all that is said and done this application combo will work. I just want you to know what exactly you are putting on your car.

Your Specs are not right on these tires
The Bridgestone REO40 245/45R18 are 26.7" diameter, recommended rim width = 7.5"-9", SR 140AA
The Michelin PS2 255/40R18 are 26" diameter.

Mainly you had the diameters reversed. I got my info from tirerack.

thanks guys, and yes I did search for a long time but so many hundreds of posts come up and nothing regrading my exact question. So my best bet is to get the potenzas for the rears or replace all four right? I don't really like the potenzas bt they'll do for now I guess.
