why is this size so common
When running aftermarket 8.5" wide wheels up front and 9.5" wide wheels out back, why does most everybody use a 245 wide tire up front and 275's on the back? Well actually I know why they use the 275's out back but why a 245 up front, instead of a 255?
With the factory 18's, the rears are 2 sizes wider than the fronts (225 and 245's).
Wouldn't the steering be more nuetral with a 255 on the front and 275 on the back?
I have 245/35/19's on 8.5" wheels on the front and 275/35/19's on the 9.5" rear wheels. The sidewalls on the front are just every so slightly stretched looking and a 255 would make the sidewall match the rears sidewall which is straight up and down. Plus by having a 2 size width difference between the front and rear, it would be similar to the factory stagger.
I went with a 245 up front mostly because that seems to be the norm for those rim sizes but I want to know if there is any benefit with running a 255/35 up front. One benifit would be more cushion for potholes any others?

Honest answer? Hype. People like the look of staggered rims and tires. 99% of them don't know or care how much the rims/tires weigh, or what they do to the actual performance and handling of the car. It's pathetic if you ask me.
I have 7.5" wide rims in front and 8" in back. 255 tires all around.

Everybody does not do anything.
255mm in front with first rate tires is great for dry road under steer. On wet roads at 70 MPH I would be skittish: wide and hydroplaning go hand-and-hand.

Well I think a better question to ask would be:
"is there any difference between running a 245 series front as opposed to a 255 front?"
And the answer is; not one you will notice.
