In all fairness to Axis.... these were isolated occurences, and they were linked to a single batch of wheels. They made things right by their customers and they make a descent low cost wheel. I've seen some mega expensive wheels crack as well. Kinesis comes to mind!!!
i have found on other forums, now that i have expanded my search, that some axis wheels tend to break, low offsets more than others. so i will stay with some sort of volk/rays wheel i think

When you say "Why pay the extra $$$$ if you dont have to.." that only applies if you are debating between two of the same itesms. If you want volks, a better wheel then axis, YOU HAVE TO PAY THE EXTRA $$$$
i would say go for the volks, but since they are out of your price range, and you can get the axis for a good deal, go for the axis man. i think everyone did a good job of pointing out the differences between both, but everyone telling you to get the volks is kind of pointless. they may be a better wheel, but never buy something you cannot afford. go with the axis. i'm sure you'll be happy with them.
if you saw them both in person, you would jump all over the volks. i dont believe they make the the matrix in 19's, 20's on a Z FTL most of the time.
I currently running a set of Axis Matrix 19" wheels on my UY Z. I have 19x8.5 fr w 275/35/19 Nitto 555's & 19x 9.5 rr w/ 275/30/19 Nitto 555's. The offset is wrong because the wheels are pushed in about 10M. Don't want spacers at this time.
Volks > Axis. Axis are heavier i believe and i have heard stories about how they are easily bent/cracked. However, if you are on a tight budget... Axis aren't that bad of a choice at all. In the end you will get what you pay for...
If you just like the look not the brand, then definitely go with Axis. The only Axis wheel that had cracking problem is the Hiro. Other than that model, they are good quality wheels.
