But from a popular culture point of view and the way everything is designed, I think we are still an English first culture more so than other countries are with their languages. This is very ironic IMO because the US is suppose to be a "melting pot" of different cultures. Put an American who speaks English only in the middle of Asia or Europe and they'll have some help around them. Put a Chinese or French in the middle of Kansas and thier odds are not as good.
You are back...i missed you.

Heh, depends. I was in Japan for a year (non military, lived in Ichihara, Chiba) and I found that many areas that if you don't speak at least a little Japanese you will have a very tough time of it. Most of the rail system (public transportation) outside of the main hubs do not have English translations. Sure, if you are main Tokyo on the JR Yamamoto line or something similar they have Chinese, Korean, English translations but if you jump onto the Kei Sei Line or an outbound JR line good luck. Also you will find that many people do not speak English there, although if you are stuck your best bet is to ask someone under the age of 30 for help as you may find someone with enough basic English to help as almost all schools have it for a class (similar to here with Spanish). Also, good luck if you need to open a bank account or file some government forms too if you are not fluent or don't have a translator.

I also didn't go there expecting anyone to accommodate me. Also we happen to have English as our main language, which has become the de facto international business language for now. Granted, this may change again in the future, but for now it allows a little easier travel for English speakers. China may have translations of some important signs in English in Beijing for example, but do you expect them to also have translations in German, French, Vietnamese, Tagalong, Arabic and 50 other languages because many people that only speak those languages go there too?

<EDIT> This wasn't inregards to the Origninal Poster. It could have been something as simple as a typo. I have made many of those as well or called something the wrong thing becasue the right word would not come to mind. It was made in reference to those that think we are so rude to everyone else. To those people I suggest you go live in another country in Central America or Asia and see just how overall accommodating they are you to on a government and greater society level and not personal level.
