Make sure that if you ever travel outside of the US, that you expect everyone to speak English too. That way we can keep the "Dirty American" stereotype alive and well.

I don't expect people to speak English when I leave the country. I do expect people that come here to though. This is the only country where we cater to others. Tell me another country who goes to the lengths we do. Have some repsect and speak the language where you live. Not too much to ask.

People who don't speak English here need to be the ones to have the repsect. I don't go somewhere else to have people cater to me. Please don't come here if you won't speak the language. It's not too much to ask.

Uh actually I'm going to have to disagree with what you are saying. English has been recongized as the universal language for business and education in many foreign countries. If you travel to Europe or the far East, you'll see English signs and audio translation everywhere. Also, many countries require English to be taught from early primary school. In the US, we basically only support one language besides our own and that is Spanish. This is due mainly to the increase of hispanics in the population. I think from a language point of view, even though the very ideal of the United States represent diviersity, we are the most closed minded and stuborn when it comes catering. We allow many cultures to coexist within our country but we are less open mind in assimilating and adapting.

I'll agree to disagree.

Go to any other country and see how many languages they give their driver's test in or how many billboards are in English. I can only speak for CA, since this is where I've lived most my life, but I can tell you we cater heavily to others and not just Mexicans.

Since we have better things to do than learn 10 languages, it is smarter to pick the one that will be more than likely used. (spanish). I guess we should learn every language of who we are trading partners with.

California is a whole different animal compare to the rest of the 49 states in the Union. You guys might as well be your own country in many aspects. The rest of the US is not as accomodating. I do agree with you regarding the driver's license test. But from a popular culture point of view and the way everything is designed, I think we are still an English first culture more so than other countries are with their languages. This is very ironic IMO because the US is suppose to be a "melting pot" of different cultures. Put an American who speaks English only in the middle of Asia or Europe and they'll have some help around them. Put a Chinese or French in the middle of Kansas and thier odds are not as good.

I'm in the Navy and I travel a lot. I have been to too many country to list. Every single one of them, will have english in them from road signs to menus at restaurants. Most people will speak more than one language also, here it is an option to learn more than one, and most of them can't really speak or type their own language.

I'm Puerto Rican, when I was in high school in PR, we couldn't gradute if we weren't fluent in english. I can understand how this state of California do more than it shear to accomodiate people from another country but people are talking this **** to far sometime. I think Some people need to respect other people cultures.
