Default 285/35/19 on a 9.5" rim??

would a 285/35/19 be too wide (visually) for a 9.5" wide rim?

Tirerack specs say a 285 is good for a 9" to 11" rim, but I don't want the tire to bulge out past the rim too much.

dear lord that is alot of rubber

The tread width is 11.2 inches, the wheel is 9.5. So the tires would stick out .85 inches on either side of the rim.

Personally i would get wider wheels or preferably narrower tires.

You guys got me thinking.....

285mm is the tire width from sidewall to sidewall. Rim width is from bead to bead. The way I see it 9.5" rims are actually about 10.5 overall width (outside to oustide edges)

285's would overhang the tires about .3" on either side not .85.
Not too bad... Maybe I'll go with 285's afterall.

That's pretty close... but what most people don't know is that a 19x9.5" wheel is really 10.5" wide overall.

The 9.5" meaurement is the tire industry standard, and it measures bead-seat to bead-seat dimension of the wheel- the tire companies are concerned with how the tire "beads-up" on the rim.

This dimension does not consider the bead flange thickness, typically 1/2" x two flanges (one towards the inside, one towards the outside of the wheel- the tire is mounted between them)- this gives you a 19x10.5 overall width.

That being said, a 9.5" is the minimum allowable wheel width for most 285 tires. A 10.0" is the 'optimal' width for most 285 tires.

It'll look a bit 'bulged out' on a 9.5", but it works.

Regards,
Bob

just an update... I have the 285's on the 9.5" wheels now.

PERFECT combo. The tire is flush with the wheel... no bulging whatsoever.

9.5" wide wheel is great for the 285/35/19!

No fitment problems either with my Eibach drop. Hell.. it looks like I could even stuff 295's in there and be ok.

VQ,

all the pics I sent you have the 285's on the rear.... If you'd like any from a particular angle let me know.
