I wouldn't call Volk's a fad. They are a quality wheel period. They have a high price tag, but when you see how they are made they command it. If you can't afford/don't like Volk's you shouldn't get them. There is nothing wrong with being different, but by the same token there is a reason so many people have Volk's. I personally like the looks of the Rotas.
EDIT:
I agree at 50 mph most wheels would get roughed up.

Just take away the Rota centercap. It's likely that the wheels would get compliments... but as soon as they find out they're not Nismo, Volks, or Bee*Rs (when they were thinking they were in the first place) and find out their Rotas, they flip out!

I'm sure most people don't buy Volks for the argument of quality. They buy them for the "social status" it represents in the car community and for name brand. I've never heard a single person in my life tell me they like Volks for the quality of craftsmanship in the wheel.

Hit a mountain wall at 50mph, That's a very hard impact, so hard that his rotors cracked. https://my350z.com/forum/media-share/266554-the-death-of-my-z-56k-no-no.html

I'm sorry but not many parts will hold up to that much force, I have pictures of many Volks, Works, Gram Lights after similiar accidents and they all pretty much look like that. The volk being forged was bent into an insane shape, work/gramlights both cracked into pieces since they were cast.

Same small group of people that always have to post in a Rota thread, I just don't understand you guys.

Incase you don't remember posting in 2-3 other Rota threads, go back and search for your "username" and "rota" in the search. Incase you are too lazy to do this I'll refresh your memory. You make claims that Rota's aren't tested to the same standards as Volk, Advan, etc.. and you spread all this misinformation when infact Rota wheels are JWL, ISO, and VIA Certified.

I'm not going to go off topic anymore in this thread though so I will PM you the pictures later today when I am on my other computer since you seem so interested. I'll even include a picture of my own set of Volks that are bent. Unfortunately the 30+ sets of Rotas that have been on my car are all in perfect shape so I doubt you want to see those

Please unless you own the product or know a ton of information about it, do not post incorrect info.

The Rota P45R (18x9.5) wheel is 22lbs.

I love mine. Ive gotten complements from vette owners, bmw owners, a gtr owner, and various random people that are next to me at lights. For $1700 shipped with wheels/tires Im happy I just couldn't justify spending $3000 on wheels/tires.

Volks are not just for social status buddy. People like myself and most others want the best for our cars. Rays happens to make perfect looking wheels for our cars. Just happens to be the best looking and best quality and the priciest. Hey, if rotas make people happy, then great but don't go around saying sh** about social status and crap. There is a reason all the sickest Z's on this forum rock Volks, Work, Advan, AME etc etc.

After doing a lot of mods to a few of my cars. I learned to just do it right the first time and buy the good parts if I can afford them. If I cannot...I just move on to the next mod or don't do it at all. It's just a lesson you learn if you mod enough and some learn it and some don't.

I think many people overlook (or simply don't bother to understand) the metallurgical properties of forged vs. cast wheels. Aluminum is going to have approximately the same density regardless of the manufacturing technique. Since forging allows for a higher yield strength and greater ductility, less aluminum can be used in the design to meet a certain strength requirement of goal...thus allowing a lighter overall wheel.

Strength specifications for forged wheels however are not necessarily higher than those of cast wheels (which is where the weight difference comes in). Although forged wheels do have mildly superior qualities, they are in no way indestructible. Forged wheels are just as likely to succumb to damage as cast, although the damage will look different (e.g. ductile vs. brittle fracture). Extent of damage will rely heavily on the manufacturing techniques used be each wheel's manufacturer.

Bottom line: if you hit a wall at 50 mph, regardless if you have Volks, Works, Rotas, TSW, OEMs etc...you're wheels will be done.

For the record, this is what a Work wheel looked like after a "mild" accident:
