So I decided to start a little project. I want a nice set of black wheels, but don't have the money right now. So, I'm painting and extra set of 03 OEM wheels that I had.
Here is my working setup.

For paint, I'm using
2-4 cans of Duplicolor Engine Enamel Gray Primer
6-8 cans of Duplicolor Engine Enamel Glossy Black
4-6 cans of Duplicolor Engine Enamel Clear Coat

First thing I do is plain ole cleaning.
(Day 1)
At first I washed them down with soap and water.
Then pressure washed.
Then washed with soap and water again.
Then sanded.
Then pressure washed.
Then sanded some more
(Day 2)
Scratched up the remaining coated paint with steel wool
Buffed off the glue and asphalt with a Dremel and 2

****ty boundo job

Cleaned them up one more time.
Let them fully dry
Started the Primer coat

My first thoughts after spraying the first coats of primer was that, I should have done a little more touch up before starting paint, and I might have bought too many cans of paint (where did i put that receipt).
I'll be going back to my parents house after work to put the first coat of black .

SOOOO Louisiana Humidity SUCKS. I went back home after work to spray my first coat of black and it dried like crap. I'm going back tomorrow afternoon and I'm going to lightly sand the surface to attempt to smooth it out, then clean them up real good, and let them dry to try again. I might end up having to buy more paint because of this mistake. Anyways heres the pictures.
It had rained earlier in the day and there was still water on the ground. It was overcast when I was painting and it started thundering.

Here's the result. Like I said, I'm not too pleased at the moment.

I should have just waited for a dryer day to paint.

The camera sucks and the pictures leave out a lot of the details

It's gonna get better, I have faith!

wow, that looks horribe. you are suppose to use degreaser to clean. if you scuffed them good enough, no primer is needed. That blotchyness is coming from overspray and spraying out of a can. I have delt with those duplicolors and they come out like that. If you were closer, i could powdercoat them for you with my powder coat machine.

Well I did degrease them and sanded the clear coat very much. The primer coat came out way better then the black coat. Something messed up, and I still think I can fix it. I'll work on it again Wednesday and see what happens. The blotchyness is from my bad painting technique and I'm not worried about that. Its the rough texture that the wheels are drying.
If worse comes to worse, I can bring the tires to get sand blasted and start all over. Would that be a good idea?
And powder coating is a little out of my budget for the time being.

You put to many coats on thats why and you used the wrong paint. Go get a can of black rustolem Hammered paint do 3 light coats so the wheel is barely covered. Then get 2 cans of clear coat and coat the **** out of them and you will get a nice glossy finish. They look textured so you didnt wait enough time in between coats. Sand them down some get a tack cloth make sure they are clean and do what I told you before.
Heres a pic of my wheels when they were painted

try do it in a closed garage. a place where there isn't much wind blowing
Painting your wheels at home isn't really making them look any "better", sorry to say. Save up for some different wheels, or have them professionally painted or powdercoated. Now nobody will ever buy those things if you wanted to sell them.

Thanks for the support and advice all. This is just a side project. I'm trying something out. If it doesn't turn out like I want, there are always other options.
