Buying the right sized tires is over rated.

I was currious. I knew going smaller would affect my speedo but can it also hinder performance? I went from a 19" wheel with a 35 series tire to an 18" wheel with a 30 series tire.

J,

Actually in theory performance should be increased going from a 19" to 18" due to the decrease in rotational mass. It really comes down to the two wheel and tire combinations you are comparing. In addition, your speedometer should not be affected at all going to an 18" wheel since that is probably what your car came fitted with off the lot. Even if your car came with 17"s the difference would be negligible.

his speedo is affected due to his tire size. your speedo doesnt care what size wheels you are wearing, it cares about what size tires you are using.

check out http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and see how much your speedo is off. should only be a couple of miles off.

You are correct, but wheel (not wheel width) AND tire size do matter in speedometer accuracy.

Your speedometer measures your revolutions using your overall outer diameter/circumference of your tire. Wheels can only effect it if they are bigger in diameter/circumference than the original tire size. You just need to get your tire's outside diameter/circumference within specs compared to the original tire size. If it is smaller than original, it will be off.

Now you're admitting "yours" is smaller than "mine"...
