Question 255/40/18 vs 275/40/18

i have a 245/40/18 in the front and a 255/40/18 in the rear (toyo t1r's) and i need new tires for the rear now, and i was wondering how the 275's will affect the handling, i seen some people say the 275's "push more" but i don't get what that means. also the 275's are supposed to be 0.6" taller and 4 pounds heaver so i wonder if that will make the car feel slower/ worse throttle response? has any one experienced the change from the 255 to 275, and what are your thoughts?

Well i havnt made that change , but i run 255's in the front and 275's in the rear. The reason why people push more is for some stupid reason they put 245 on the front with 275's in the rear.

I can't help you on the handling characteristics, however, at 20mm more rolling resistance, taller effective gearing, and 4lbs per tire heavier, you *will* notice decreased acceleration, and worse gas mileage. Guaranteed. I wouldn't put a 275 on any wheel less than 9.5" wide either.

well my 255's are kind of small for the 9" wheel, thats why i was thinking the 275's, and i understand people say they push more, my question on that was what does "push more" mean ? over steer, under steer?

I can answer that. The greater difference in tire width from front to rear causes the rear to grip better than the front....causing what's commonly referred to as "understeer" or "pushing" or "plowing." Basically, not a sporty feel at all. I run a 20 mm diff between front and rear, and I'd prefer 10mm or even same width all around. They make some sizes in 265/40 18, you might try that?

Oh, and on a 9" wide wheel, 265 is ideal, but I'd err on the narrower side to keep the tire's contact patch more stable in hard cornering, thus my recommendation would be to stick with 255/40 18 rear, and possibly the same front.
