I think only the SSRs are stronger..hence my SSRs

 

They're very strong, and one of many reasons why I'm now on my 5th set of Volks!

 

the finishes are not so strong for the most part.

My stock Track wheels have been through serious city abuse and arent even slightly bent. I hit a pothole so big one time it put a hole in my exhaust pipe and it didnt bend the Rays stockers. I now run 19" Volks and so far so good. My finish is also very good, looks new even after 3+ years.

 

I'm closing in on 3 years of ownership with the Volk SF Winnings (Mercury Silver) and am overall very happy with the purchase. Subjectively, I thought (and still do) that it is the best looking rim for the 350z. In this instance (rim purchase), I do believe that they are worth the money and you get what you pay for. As I'm sure you can see in this thread and many others on the site, Volks' reputation within the community is nearly unmatched.

Living in the DC area, I did bend the lip of a front rim hitting a monster of a metal plate around some road construction. It was the biggest 'pothole' I have ever hit and definitely shook the whole car. I didn't mind paying for the lip repair based on that.

Hmm, they don't have the nickname super soft rims for nothing.

 

If you hit a pothole hard enough, Volks will bend like any other wheel. Volks are high quality, but the popularity of these wheels is more due to it's looks and brand name.

 

Two of my friends got into accidents recently.

One drives a Cayman S with the stock Porsche S wheels and the second a Turboed Z with TE37's.

Both accidents were so similar, loss of control resulting in slapping several curbs.

The Porsche wheels broke! While the Volks have slightly bent lips.... needless to say, the guy swears by them and has a replacement set on order.

THAT is an inaccurate statement. SSR's are great wheels but they're not even truely forged. RAYS wheels will out beat SSR's structural durability any day of the week.

Back on topic, the SF-Winning's are a durable wheel just like any other RAYS wheel but it definitely has limitations compared to a forged monoblock. The outer barrel on the 2 piece wheel will be stronger, lighter, and a lot more durable than 95% of the aftermarket multi-piece wheels out there. You can compare brand names such as HRE, iFORGED, JLine, SSR, etc. Don't expect the wheel to be indestructible; a collision or hitting a deep enough pothole at a high-speed will damage the wheel but the chances with a forged monoblock wheel is a lot more unlikely. Comparing RAYS 2 piece forged wheels with any of the other competitors will be a lot stronger. You hit that same pothole at the same speed with a non branded RAYS wheel, the chances of structural compromise and increased damage is A LOT more likely than compared to a RAYS wheel.

 

I often hear that Volks are stronger than other wheels. I have forged RAYS wheels and I don't doubt they're strong, but how can you guys say they're stronger and more durable than most other forged wheels. Any evidence or info to back up these claims?

 

well lets put it this way, volk is made by rays, and stock 350z wheels are rays...so try driving over a pothole 10 times on your stock wheels and see what happens....but it depends on how much rubber

 

There really is no evidence that can back this up in a real-world scenario but in a motorsport perspective, the durability of RAYS wheels has been proven time and time again. If they're strong, light and durable enough for Formula One, Super Taikyu, Super GT and the countless other motorsports that RAYS wheels are used in and with the respective teams, than yea, it has definitely been proven. Not to mention that a lot of O.E's out source wheel manufacturing like Toyota, NISSAN, Mazda, Mitsubishi, etc to RAYS. What other wheel company is ISO certified, JWL approved AND JWL+R approved? The standards of RAYS manufacturing process was so high that JWL had to create another standard just for RAYS which is JWL+R.
