Then your problem is unique. Tire height is generally a VDC not a TCS problem. Keep in mind that new tires are slippery especially in corners.

Are you certain that the correct wheels are on the correct axle?
And that the same size tires are on the same axle?

Will be interested in the solution.

David,

I think your (above) post may confuse the issue. We have already established that Sprayed’s rear tires are too short (too small an overall diameter). I don’t understand why you post a comparison to 225/45-18” tires since these are what he has on the front, and nothing to do with why his rears are too short (except that maybe you are doing a front to rear comparison). Sprayed’s front tires (225/45-18”) are the correct size (for overall diameter).

You seem to believe that it is always VDC that causes problems with incorrectly sized tires.

Having owned and driven a 2003 Enthusiast model Z, I can say that TCS by itself can activate SLIP when the car has the wrong sized tires. It isn’t just VDC equipped-Z’s where this happens. I only mention this since you constantly ask if the car has VDC.

OK - 275/40/18 is too wide for your stock 8.5" rear wheel. A 265/40/18 will be OK, but please go no wider. A 245/40/18 up front will be just fine. Using those two sizes will keep VDC happy, maintain the proper front to rear stagger, and give you the wider tire your looking for.

LOL. There is a difference between the operation of VDC and the operation of TCS. But this is not the place for a debate. As long as we get Sprayed fixed that’s all that counts.

No worries. I went back today and told them what all of you were telling me. They had no problem with finding 4 new Toyos for me. 245/40/18 for the front and 255/40/18 for the back. Hit a couple of hard corners and had no slippage. You guys were a life saver. I will definitely do my homework in the future and seek these boards for help and advice. Thanks again.

I used to work at a tire shop, I was the only educated one there that knew my stuff. When a car came in and wanted to switch sizes, it was easy to dissaude them from making a dumb and expensive mistake from just buying whatever they 'thought would fit'.

It's a good thing the shop took care of you, all of the plus size application I was not 100% sure about, i made the customer and my manager sign a waiver which basically made the customer look crazy for attempting something nobody was sure about! This stopped more than a couple people from messing up their car and themselves

David,

I apologize… I looked at the chart that you posted and now realize that your point was that Sprayed’s original (problematic) rear tires were actually shorter (overall diameter) than his fronts. Of course that will result in erratic TCS deployment.

I’m going to go with the “senior moment” for my excuse on missing this one. Sorry for the confusion.

Sprayed
Glad to hear you got this fixed. I think you are really going to like the 245/40-18” tires on the front. When I went with this front size, I was surprised at how much better the car handled with neutral-steer and more responsive turn-in.

I’m also curious if you notice any feeling of improved acceleration since your rears (255/40-18”) are within OEM specifications, but slightly shorter (about ½” shorter overall diameter than stock).

Drive these new tires for a day or two, and then please report back on this (your) thread with any impressions.

Subscribing…

Its cool. TCS and VDC and ABS is a complicated system. We are all learning.
