When you brake, the weight of the car gets transferred to the front wheels thus making the front brakes work harder than the rears. You will notice similar wear and tear when it comes to tire wear in the rear because of RWD.

nothing wrong with down-shifting as low as 2nd gear to slow down. There shouldn't be extra strain on your clutch, tranny, and synchros as long as you properly revmatch "plus it sounds freaking cool" . But I would never downshift in 1st to slow down. only go into first from from a stop and if i'm going less than 5mph.
