You're legally good until it gets down to the wear bars. Those are the raised sections that run across the bottom of each main tread channel, spaced all around the circumference of the tire. Those indicate when you have 1/16" of tread left. While that's still legal, most of the time it's way to dangerous to drive on, especially when wet or in hard driving situations.

Some members will ride until the wear bars show.
As DavesZ#3 mentioned, wet performance is degraded way before you can see the bars. Tire performance (or non-performance) should never be a “surprise.” About every 5,000 miles I experiment in an empty parking lot in the rain.
