I would recommend sticking with 18" wheels for a street car. Just be sure to stick with a 40 series sidewall, a common tire setup is 245/40/18 front and 275/40/18 rear. Also if you are still worried about ride quality be sure to pick a tire with a softer sidewall like the Toyo T1R, these provide a very smooth ride for daily driven cars while still having nice grip.
The only time I would consider 17" wheels on a Z is for a track car looking for an inexpensive setup. 17" wheels are inexpensive and 17" competition tires are very common and are a whole lot cheaper than larger 18" tires.

What tire setup would you recommend for a track setup on stock 17's? I was thinking 235-45;s on the rear and 225-45's on the front just to keep things affordable. Either T1R's or Kumho Ecsta MX. I had Pilot sports on my 18's and loved them but there crazy expensive and I replaced my rear 18's with the T1R's and like them a lot.

Seriously why would you waste money to make your car look worse? stick with the stock wheels and get tires that are reviewed to ride well like T1Rs.
17"s look STUPID. Go get a civic if you want 17"s
And this is a sports car, if I was jealous of my friends who have trucks, i would have bought a truck....
