I wanted 255/40/18 for the rear but they were back ordered so went with 265/35/18. (235/40/18 for the front) I have no regrets at all with the 265s. Its not fair to compare SO3s with the stock RE40s but the 265s have worked extremely well for both autocross and track. The understeer is definitely manageable now. I had thought that 35 profile tires might be harsh on the street but so far have not had any problems.
John: Are there written guidelines that limit tire size to 255/40/18 for the 8.5" track wheels?

No, as many widths will vary tire to tire by a small margin. I have yet to hear of anybody putting a 265 on the OEM 8.5" rim, and I would be a little concerned that the tire bead may come unseated off the rim under really hard driving conditions. But now you've sparked my curiousity...
I think that fact that the rear are 35 series tires helps the situation...less likely to roll over, no tire 'bulge'.
The overall wheel height is 5% less than stock. Subjectively they don't look too large for the wheel.

not twitchy either at slow or high speed.
Sorry I don't have a digital camera.
Some comparison data between the tires:
This side wall height is 3.7" compared with 4.3"
The radius is 12.7" rather than 13.3"
The circumference is 79.5" rather than 83.8" (-5.2%)

S-03 specs
droideka: thanks for the great reference table. Next time I replace tires. I'll wait for the right size. In the meantime I hope that I don't notice any difference between the two.
I realize now that the sales rep. probably didn't really care what size I wanted. He just assumed that I knew what I was talking about.

I wouldn't hesitate to go with 265/35/18 in front and rear. One of the nationally competitive drivers was running 275/40/17's on his 17X7.5" front wheel so I think it should fit with no problem.
I'm running 275/40/17 F/R on 17X9's. - Kumho Victoracers
I had Kumho Ecsta V700's 265/35/18 on the track rears with no problems, not even close to a problem.
I had 225/35/18 on the track fronts and had severe understeer, I wouldn't recommend this for anyone who wants to be competitive. I'd definitely go for 265/35's for autocross if they'll clear the suspension parts on the inside, my 275's on 35mm offset had about 1/8 inch.
Now if these wheels are not dedicated to autocross with R-compound, then you'd be able to go with 245's in front. Unfortunately Kumho Ecsta's don't come in 245's.

I have been running 265 in the back all year with no problem, the 225 up front sucks, but just added the Stillen adj sway bar, set on Medium, and found A compound 245 Hoosier, will try both this weekend.
The rear stays put at 33 PSI or more, less it gets loose, front I have been around 39-41 lately as it has been extremely hot here,
will be at the Nationals in BS with 4 other Z's.
Another guy has 255 all around on a Enthusiast Model with 17 inch rims, works great for him with huge pressure in them around 50 front, 40 rear

Autocrossing doesn't even come close to exerting the same forces on the wheels that a high-speed road course will. Running tires too wide for the rims on a road course is at your own risk and you *could* shear the tires right off the rim in high-speed corners.
We have been running Hoosier 245X40X18 on all 4 corners this season with lots of AutoX and Lots of OT and they seem to work very well. A tad pricy for Hoosiers but o Well.

So I wonder if 245/40/17 hoosiers would work well on my Enkei 17X9 rims. I ran into a hella deal on a couple sets. Would that be better than my 275/40 Kumho Victoracers since Hoosiers are supposed to provide superior grip????
