Question Sumitomo HTR Z II

anyone run these and what do you think about them?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a set of Enkei Racing RPF1 Black Painted wheels and tire rack has a really good price on the Sumitomos also.

Let me know what you think.

I have HTR Z III on my rears. I've read bad things about II and good things about III. After being on them and realizing you get what you pay for, I can't imagine what II must be like. III isn't very grippy nor does it do too well in the rain. They are completely useless in sleet, btw. I suggest you find a better set.

Interesting that you can name a tire, any tire, and someone will tell you how fantastic it is. The mind has a unique ability to rationalise a $800 purchase.

General Exclaim UHPs seem too good to be true. I heard General is owned by Goodyear.

I say go with a more well known brand and slightly higher on the tire performance level.

For your Miata, just get the Azenis RT-615 and call it a day . . .

Default Decent for bad weather

I got a set of HTR+ for my offseason tires. That's where they excel, especially for the price. Rain and snow they perform brilliantly. Grip really well in the rain, get you home in the snow. However, they are just average for dry roads. When entering a corner at speed, you can feel a shift behind you like the back end is getting ready to break out, almost like the wheel is starting to roll over the sidewall. I'll leave these on the stock rims for winter and throw 19s on in the spring.

I really like my RE-01R. My last set of tires were Azenis 615s. I rather the Bridgestones so far. I only have 2 autocross events, 6 runs each, on the RE-01R right now and it was in cooler weather. I can't wait to see how they perform when they get hot during the hotter/summer months down here. I think they'll perform better at hotter temps than the 615s.

just remember something John - what works well (or poorly) on one car, can behave TOTALLY differently on another car. Ask the Miata guys what they run....they'll give you the straight poop.

That being said, we have these tires on our '06 Si with 18x8.5 Volks, and they've worked quite well as an everyday type of tire. Certainly well worth the low price of admission, worked just fine in the wet. You're not going to set any lap records on them, but that's not what we got them for in the first place. They've lasted well even with fair amounts of camber as well.

Sumitomo is a HUGE company btw. In the world of tires, there are very, very few manufacturers. Lots of brands though.
