Default Do I Need a New Tire!

Or I should say does my father need a new tire. When I got home yesterday my father told me he had curbed his wheel and wanted to know if it was ok.

He pulled into a parking garage with his M3 and the attendent came running over and and said he liked the car and told him he could park in some sort of special parking because he didn't think there were any end spots down in the regular garage or something.

So my father was like alright, and when the guy guided him where he should go, they both forgot there was one of those massive parking garage curbs angled the wrong way. So he curbed the tire and wheel and it took a slice out of the rubber on the sidewall.

I will see if I can take some pics tonight, but it looks similiar to someone took a peeler to a piece of motzorella cheese, but on the sidewall of the tire. its still hanging by a thread.

Is it possible to have a blowout or something happen, missing this rubber on the side?

Thanks

I bet dad can make better decisions about tires than I can.

if it were me, i'd just drive on the tire and check if that spot bulges out in the future. if it doesn't bulge should be ok

Thats what I was figuring. Its part of the rubber that would be worn off after severly thrashing the car around corners.

Its got those runflat PS2's that BMW puts on all of their cars and the thing only has 5,000 miles on it. So if he has to get a new one he will probably have to get a matching set of front tires, and thats probably going to run him about 700 bucks.

When I told him that he told me to superglue it......

julian's got it, just look how deep the peel is and make a judgement yourself. if its too close to call then drive on it for a little while and check for bulge every so often. as julian said, if it doesnt bulge you should be ok

Are you sure? (See below)

The PS2 ZP should be able to take a 3mph bump into a curb without degradation to the sidewall integrity. I don't, however, understand how much "chunk" was taken out of the tire.
