My personal rule of thumb is that the rim should always be lighter in color than the body for the most contrast. (Body dark silver, wheels light silver, tires black -- the 3 colors create a good contrast) Following that rule, I'd go with the silver.

Probably. Salt + machined lip rims sounds like a bad recipe. Why drive rims with machined lips in the snow in the first place? Put the stock wheels, or some other crappy equivalents, back on in the winter.
