Default tire question w/ stock wheels

ok so i have 05 g35 coupe 18's. i know they are the same size as my old 350z 18's. previously ive ran a 255/45/18 rear and 245/40/18 front

my question is, would a 265/40/18 rear tire be too wide for the 8" wheels? or should i stick with the 255's? ive heard that you cant do it... then ive heard all these people running even 275's on their 8in wheel on the track..

the only thing about the 255's was a little taller than the stock size. the 265 is very close to OEM size but in the other direction. its a tad shorter.

anyway my question again is, would it be "safe" to run the 265's on the 8" wheel

8.5" minimum is the recommendation for a 265mm tire. People venture out of the recommendations for specialty applications (autox) or because they choose to ignore manufacturer's recommendations. I'd stick with the 255.

That’s the good thing about the internet. Name a tire size, any tire size and someone will tell you that its OK. Try it.

I agree with Scott.

Of course you can install a 265mm tire on and 8” wide wheel, but doing this has these disadvantages:

1) The tire will look bulged. The "doughnut look" is fine and functional for 4WD/off-road vehicles with relatively shorter wheels and taller tires (a very forgiving wheel/tire setup), but not very attractive on a sport car with taller wheels and shorter sidewalls on the tires.

2) The tread won’t lay flat to the roadway at the recommended psi. That means you will need to run at a lower pressure to get the right patch. That’s fine for the track and short runs, but not a good thing for a DD you run on the street.
