Default Cleaning Big Lips...

Hey guys,

I just wanted to get an idea on how to keep my lips on my new rims the best they possibly can be. The question is, what do you guys use to clean the the big lips of your Volk, Work, etc. without getting scratches? What gives you the most success at not scratching them? And when you go about drying them, what towels etc. do you use?

I'm looking at this sponge to use to clean the Wheels. http://www.zymol.com/zymolsponge1pk.aspx

What do you guys think? I know not to use anything but soap and water.

Also would this soap be safe for the anodized finish of my Volks?http://www.zymol.com/zymolclear16oz.aspx

I know theres a thread about maintaing Volks, but I didn't get much help there. Also I thought this would be the best place to post this, seeing as though most of the people with these wheels view the Wheel Tech Area.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

How did you not get help there? Treat them the same way you treat the paint on your car. Clean them with the same soap+water you clean on your car, and dry with a microfiber towel. You don't need to go out and buy special soap. 42$ for a bottle of soap?

Thanks guys, It's not that I didn't get help in that thread, just didn't get responses very quickly, some people don't notice to reply in the stickies as often.

I understand that they are rims, and are going to get dirty haha. I'm not trying to be that guy who doesn't want to drive the car because god forbid a scratch gets on there. I just don't want to be the one to make the scratches in the first place. If they get scratched while i'm driving it won't matter as much as me doing the harm while cleaning them.

I wash with soap water when the wheel is cool do a quick lap around the block to air dry once soap is rinsed off then finish off with Mothers Quick Detailer and a microfiber towel.

Pics of new wheels?

Not just yet man, i've been waiting on them since February . They should be arriving in a few weeks. It will just make it that much better when they arrive. Reason i'm asking now is that i'm going to buy a bunch of new cleaning supplies for the Z. It needs a fresh coat of wax. And it doesn't hurt to learn some cleaning tips along the way.

I should have some pics of the Z right after the wheels come and I get everything installed, I've got some new tires, bc coilovers, and a camber kit that need to go on with the rims. Hopefully thats sometime soon!

Thanks again for the advice.

Thanks Waizz, I will update pics as soon as they arrive. Been waiting long enough to do so! Finally found a buyer for the LMGT4's as well.

I guess us "Yolk" owners have something wrong with us!

When you pay close to 3k for a set of rims without tires, and wait 5 months and counting, you too would be as worked up as me.

I've always used a microfiber towel and just water. LOTS of water! And I wax mine about once a year with Wheel Wax. never wipe them when they are dry. Just be extra careful with them, as the lips scratch very easily. It's inevitable that you'll get some small scratches just from driving them, but you can keep this to a minimum.

The most important thing to do, in my opinion, is to always keep them clean. For some reason, people see the dirt and dust that piles up in the deep dish, and think they need to rub it, and it scratches them badly. Every time anyone even starts looking at my car, I'm like "DON'T TOUCH MY F*&K$#@ WHEELS!" The best thing I've been able to do to prevent this is to keep the lips as clean as possible at all times, so there's nothing for them to wipe!

I don't use sponges at all on any exterior part, only to clean engine bay. Was told by an OCD detailer that best thing to wash and dry is chamois skin. Doesn't trap dirt and small particles like the sponge and in turn rub all over like sandpaper (exaggerated a bit but kind of that concept). Chamois skin, nothing gets trapped, rinses right off.
I use one to wash wheels
another to wash paint
one to dry wheels
another to dry paint
I use the same soap on both.
So far so good.

*agree with microsteve - never dry wipe any part of your wheel or car...it's like dry humping, satisfying at the moment but a complete mess when your done.

Checkout DetailedImage.com. Great website for all things detailing including how-tos and products. Best site I've seen on the subject and also a sponsor here.

As stated a million times by all the wheel aficionados. "SOAP AND WATER" only and wash them once a week. Brake dust will settle in and be a b&tch to clean if ur not on top of things. The most common soaps to use and not to use can be found in the Volk maintenance thread...

As mentioned before, Meguiars Quick Detailer comes in handy. I've been using it on my volks for 2 years and its not harsh on the finish of the wheels. I use it from time to time when i want to clean the wheels but don't want to wash the entire car.

+1 on checking the vendor DetailedImage. A lot of useful information as well as some good products.

I read somewhere about there being this special wax bar for volks wheels that costs like $1k, but a lifetime refill...

Add on if you have more info...

I already forgot lol

(oh yeah, I read it somewhere on this forum. Someone asked how to clean volks)

Sweet, congrats.

Also just wanted to add that I use Turtle Wax Wash & Wax as my wash soap and also a soft chamois mitt to wash the wheels (never use a sponge, they trap dirt).

I used Windex on my first set of wheels with big lips so whatever you do please don't do that.

I use a quality automotive soap and water to do my wheels... I sometimes use Griots Garage wheel cleaner but BBS approves it for all its finishes. My lips are not cleared so I polish them with Wenol fine polish (Blue Tube) for a quick polish. If they get a little too dull I use Wenol Polish (Red Tube) then follow it up with the fine polish and my lips look sick. I use a Micro Fiber to dry my wheels rather than a Chamois... mine is rather pricey and has NEVER touched the floor. My buddy has Work Varianza's and his lips are cleared... so he uses soap and water and they look pristine.
