Question What is generally the markup for tires?

I'm lookin for tires for my girlfriend, and it seems that tire shops differ greatly in what they quote. So this leads me to believe that the cost is very negotiable. Are the salesmen on commision? What's the best way to deal with them? Thanks.

if you look at tire rack, thier prices are pretty dang close to wholesale prices. I get tires there at wholesale from an account we have through them. I usually only get 5-$10 off each tire. Really not that much. Now if you just walk into you neighborhood tire shop, I bet the markup is much much higher

So they should at least come close to tire rack, cause they make money on the install. Thanks for the info.

average tire shop marks up the price of the tire about 4x what they pay for them. I got a buddy who gets his tires from work at 10% above cost. Can get kumho mx 245/45/18 at 55 a tire. We'd pay about 200 each for it.
