I just got some wheels for my 2003 350Z. I got a used set of 20" Axis shine for $1300 in like new condition, 80% tread too. They look great, but I noticed that the rear tires are only 30 series and the front are 35 series.

Does anyone know why you would do that? The previous owner said they came packaged like that.

Also, the rear tires are only 275 wide, and I think a 280 or 285 would look much better, not sure why they would do that either.

I don't think it's due to rubbing, mine is at stock ride height and they rarely rub on a deep bump in the front, rear is fine though...

you have not noted the width of your fronts, so again, dunno.

If your fronts are bigger than your rears, you are in for trouble w the VDC and/or traction control. Not sure what you have.

 

The profile is meaningless by itself. When you take it into account with the section width, then the picture of "why" makes more sense.

It's a way of adjusting the OD of the tire to try and maintain the same as OEM setup.

 

yeah if hes rollin 245 35 20 and 275 30 20 hes still bigger up front...

i ran that before, looked weak imho. Your rear size is fine OP, drop to a 30 series up front and it will look much better. btw you start getting pricey after 275 in a 20 inch tire.

OP - post wheel widths and offsets along with tire widths. That's what is needed to get an accurate picture of the setup.

 

20x9 front.
20x10.5 rear.

The dash is light free, so it's not the sizing I'm wounding about.

Just curiou as to why you wouldn't get 35 series all around...

People do that because
1. Clueless and just order tires that would work for most cars where the sidewall height is the same front and rear.
2. Because they want the sidewall to have the same look front and rear cause they think it looks better.

 

Front tire is taller than rear.

 

What trim level is your Z? Base? Touring?

If you have TCS or VDC, you might want to read this before you put those wheels/tires to use...

op my wheels/tires 245/35/20 an 275/30/20 were the same size came like that as a package deal when i bought the wheels.I have a grand touring with traction control it caused no problems for the 3 years i had them on the car. You will be fine.If you dont like the look change it,if you do keep it..

I've driven on them for about 60miles and not even a blink of vdc/slip on the dash.

Based on those calculators my current stagger is .3"(probably more with the tread being slightly less in the rear).

If I switch to:

285/30 no stagger
285/35 1.1" stagger
275/35 .8" stagger

I think the 285/35 or 280/35 would be the best look. Is 1" of stagger too much?

Thanks DavesZ, that makes a lot of sense. If I go with a 280/35/20 in the rear I will end up with .9" stagger, right in oem recommended range of 1/2"-1".

Maybe when it's time for new tires I'll do that.

Also, I'm guessing I'm not showing a vdc/slip light now because the fronts are actually bugger than the rear, and have more tread, creating enough stagger...

You could be right. It's def touring. Came with the 6 spoke 18's and fully loaded.

I think I'll just up the rear to 35 series once I need a new pair. For now it doesn't look that bad, and there is a solid amount of tread left.
