Powdercoating Wheels
Hey guys, I was thinking about powder coating my stock rims on my z. Is that a good idea or no? Also, if I decide to get rid of a powder coat, is that possible? And if I did remove the powder coat, would the rims look the way they did before the coating? Thanks
You have to strip the existing finish off of the wheels before they can be powder coated. Powder coating is pretty good for wheels since the finish is generally quite durable. Ultimately though it's up to you if you think it would be worth it. You'll basically need to strip the wheel down to the bare metal again if you want to refinish them again. I also wouldn't recommend powder coating wheels more than a couple times, as it could potentially make the wheel more brittle when heat cycled like that.
sorry to hijack the thread, I have Nismo LMGT4 powder-coated in black and I am planning to coat it again cause the finish is not good..would it affect it...these are forget mono block wheels made by volks

You do have to prep them correctly but p/c holds up very well on wheels if applied properly.
Properly means professionally. A diy kit with e z bake oven probably wont work properly. There are several companies in NC that can do it properly, one in Mooresville that I have used several times.

You could probably get them coated again, just make sure that the place you take them to has experience powder coating wheels.
