Widest tires on STOCK 17" rims?
The widest tire for the stock rims are 245/45/17 front and 255/45/17 rear. This is staying within the tire manufactures minimum rim width.
The minimum rim width for a 275/40/17 is 9" , not going to work right at all and the tire is a little too short.

you sure they were 275 on stock 17" rims? or maybe track rims?
the 17" rims are 8" in back right? Id say 255 reasonably, 265 to push the limit. you will see noticable angle in the sidewall at 265, 275 Id expect the car to ride very oddly.

if you go to tirerack.com and check up the numbers on the stock tire width, it is the same as most other tires that are two sizes wider. So the stock tires on the back for example are 235's, but the measurements taken for tread width say it's just a hair less wide than say a 255 series tire on most any other brand.
Basically I'm asking if the stock tires seem to run wider than other tires do...Make sense?

I'm running 275/40/17 rears and 235/45/17 on the fronts. Have done this since I got the Z and have had not one problem. Discount Tire will suggest that you might even be able to run 285's on the rear with 17's. There is no bulge to make the wheels look weird. It just works.
If you want to see pics of my set-up goto member search and look under my name, ( c's, pg. 27, clyde, pg. 3, 12/28/02) there are several pics. showing the 275's mounted from different angles.
