Default Help Removing Lug Nuts from Wheels

ok ...sorry i dont have more info...the rims came on the car when i bought it. it could be nothing but it has 5 lugnuts ...i got 4 of them off with an air ratchet and for some reason the 5th seems to be locked into place...

the only thing i can gather is the cap has something to do with it. its seems to start to turn and then its stuck. i dont have any sort of key to get the cap off to see if thats the problem.

so in short do i need to get the center cap off? or is this a case of a rusted bolt or something..thanks in advance for your advice.

Post a photo, you probably have wheel locks on your wheels and don't have the key

also put the other 4 lugs back on and tighten to 80ft lb. Then break the last one loose.

Put a lug wrench on it and twist the stud off. Should take about 2 seconds. Twist it quick to break it off, you don't want the lug to just spin on the stud, then you are in trouble. Be careful and don't let the wrench get away from you and ding a wheel. Replace stud and lug nut

Breaker bar and the proper socket. The stud will probably break off and need to be replaced. happens from time to time, no big deal.

The OEM lug wrench you are probably using does not have the proper leverage you need to break the stud.

I had several nuts stuck on one wheel once, after an out of town tire shop repaired a flat for me and overtightened the nuts. Found out a few months later when I needed to change brake pads. Took the car to a local shop and had them broken free with their impact wrench - no damage incurred. Normally, I use a torque wrench to properly tighten the nuts, and bring mine with me when I need tire service. Also, Permatex Silver Anti-Sieze on the studs. One proper application will last for years.

take advantage of any leverage you can get. breaker bar is great like he said.

Under no circumstance do I ever use an impact wrench on my aftermarket lugs

As others have stated you should try to find a socket that can work with your correct lug size and use a torque wrench set at 80lbs

You should also look into picking up one of these in case you stripped the grooves from the lugs, it will help to wrap around the lug no matter the pattern:

Great tool , great choice to have before you break out the really destructive stuff. Only bad thing about it, doesn't fit in the lug openings of many wheels.

Ah yes good point, I believe there is also a slimmer one as well which I remember seeing it at Pep Boys before

Now that I'm looking at his pic on a bigger monitor I think he just needs a longer lug nut adaptor since the lugs don't look stripped, what do you think?

It looks like a standard size lug set that you have OP, just look at picking up something like this in your same lug size

Actually, the proper way to do that is to put the two adjacent to the stuck one on tight and the two farthest away loose (or leave off in this case). That allows the wheel to "rock" a little releasing the pressure on the stuck nut.

A lot of times when the wheel isn't flat on the rotor/hub, the additional pressure from tightening one or more nuts farthest from the stuck one put additional pressure on it.

Then again, it could be seized on and there's no way other than breaking the stud that gonna work.
