3 Piece Wheel Rebuilding - Anyone with Experiece?
So the Z that I picked up last fall came with 3 Piece Maya GR5 (Or GRS finding information about these wheels is pretty tough since it sounds like they have gone out of production).
Anyways one of them has some pretty serious damage on one of the rears.
I've been looking around, reading and watching videos on both repairing this damage & replacing the outer barrels. I think ultimately what I want to do is replace all 4 outer barrels and re-powder the faces.
I spend some time on volkswagen forums also since my DD jetta is in a perpetual state of requiring maintenance. A lot of those guys are able to take apart their 16-17" BBS' & redo just about anything with them with minimal headaches and silicone.
So has anyone taken this on? I've heard these larger wheels can be welded at the barrels & the faces. I know getting the tires off will be my first step and evaluating from there.
Beyond that - does anybody have any thoughts on what color I should do the faces? Going on a black Z, i've kicked around going chrome lip with bronze/gold faces. Or just chrome lip w/ brushed aluminum face w/ gold bolts around the perimeters. I'm usually not a fan of colored faces, of course some of my buddies are saying chrome lip black face. If I got real crazy I'd almost kick around a color like the brickyard Z. But nothing real loud.
Any input is appreciated! Here's the car, wheel & close up of the damage
