This is a strange problem and before I spend any money I wanted to check with you guys first.

Anyway, I had my stock 18's with the TPMS since I bought my car in January. I recently got a new wheel and tire setup. They are 19's now. I bought the tires and had them installed at Discount Tire. For the first week or so all was good,then out of the blue my TPMS warning light lit up. First it was the right rear and then a few days later the left rear. I took it back to Discount and they put a code reader on it and it came back with a few codes,one of which was a dead battery in the sensor. He said he could replace the 2 rears for 120.00. I was skeptical so he just reset the the computer the light went off and I was on my way...

10 minutes later it came back on. Now, Im not opposed to spending the money to get it fixed but it just seems weird that all of a sudden the 2 rears went bad at the same time. Is it possible the batteries did go bad? Did the larger tire and wheels have some thing to do with it? Im not sure what to do...

odd coincidence that all of a sudden you had two batteries go dead. sounds more like they damaged the sensors when removing from old wheels and putting them on the new ones.

It is a little strange that two batteries would go out at the same time, but the average life of the TPMS batteries is about 5 years. So........it is possible you need both rear batteries replaced and the fronts may need replacement soon.

Interesting... I actually have a appointment to have my front 225/45/18's replaced this weekend at a discount tire shop. I selected to not have the TPSM rebuilt for $15.00 on both tires but now I'm reconsidering this.

Here's the question. If there only charging 15 bux for a tpsm rebuild kit on 2 tires on their website, why the hell are they gonna charge you $120.00? for 2 tires. Their website says they can do it for way less.

That throws up red flags about that individual shop.

Here's what I got off their website for 4 tires:

TPMS Rebuild Kit $7.50ea (qnty4) $30.00

WTF! Are they gonna charge you $120.00 for 2 TPMS rebuild kits.

GL OP I would call Discount Tires Corporate office. Who ever runs that individual shop is trying to screw you.

Sorry for the confusion. 120.00 is to replace the whole sensor unit..

It does seem coincidental,but I really dont have an argument that it was some thing they did.They told me the same thing...they last about 5 years or 3000hours. I guess Ill get them replaced and it the new ones do it too Ill know its some thing else.

maybe the $7.50 charge is if they are rebuilding while the tire is off?

Side note - I had never heard that the TPMS sensors had a 5 year battery life. This makes me very tempted to replace the batteries when I get tires later this summer.

The rebuild kit is just the o-rings. Yes they only last 5 years. If two are gone, the others will soon. I have a set of 4 for sale that were a year old when I pulled them. Hit me up if you're interested

I just got a new set of tires and wheels...car is 5 years old. Sensors were fine but I still replaced em. You've got the tires and wheels off the car..may as well replace em because they're *good* for 5 years (batteries)..maybe a bit more. You can get OEM Schrader for around $50 each...don't buy from Nissan. You should always *rebuild* them whenever you get new tires...kits are cheap.

My '05 is obviously way past the 5 year battery life mentioned, but perhaps not past 3000 hours since it's about 34,000 on the odometer. What's the experience of others with low mileage, and thus low hours?

To clarify for anyone who is still a bit confused about the whole tpms thing..The kits are meant to last only 5 years, but like OEM car batteries they tend to last longer for some. The rebuilt kits that shops offer are only for the rubber O ring and the plastic "crown" around your sensor. It has nothing to do with the sensor or the battery itself. Yes, once the battery in the sensor is dead you will have to replace the whole sensor. I would buy OEM replacements, not dealership ones. Hopefully that clears up any confusion.
