Default New Buyer Advice

Hey guys,

My search for a new fun car has lead me to a 350z.

I'm looking for a roadster with the 6 speed in Touring or Grand Touring trim.
I have two prospects that I intend to see this weekend.

One is a 2007 black touring roadster.
It has 95,000 miles and is $13,500.

The other is a 2006 dark grey grand touring roadster and it would run me $14,000. But it only has 53,000 miles.

My color preference is black and obviously I would like to have an 07+.

But this will be a daily for me so mileage factors in more than just a purely toy car would.

My question for you veterans is how much is the 07 High Rev motor worth over an 06 DE?

I have read that 06s have an oil burning issue. But I couldn't find a definitive answer as to whether that was all 2006 models or just some.

Given those two choices which way would you go?

Thanks everyone

The 2006 is prone to oil consumption, it does have a considerable amount of less miles. How is the condition of both cars?

I've owned an 06 and now own an 08 and love the HR way more. I recommend posting links so other users can see both cars.

hr>de anyday of the week. mileage is a SMALL factor IF the car was well taken car off. the 06 mileage wont look so appealing if it still has oem oil

Find an 07-08. To achieve the same power levels you practically have to go turbo in DEs.

I think what he meant was you'd have to do forced induction to be able to get to / pass the HP an HR can make. A DE isn't going to make 290-300whp without FI or some serious cash. However, a DE will still get relatively close. My 06 made 279 on a dynojet at Hills Garage.

I'll give the same advice I gave a while back to someone else here:

Run away from any 06 Z with a manual transmission. Unless the seller lets you drive it for a 1000 miles, you'll never know if it burns oil unless you buy it. The other person didn't listen, and got an oil burner.

The 07-09 350Z is known for clutch slave cylinder problems. I replaced mine once, and I've got a zspeed heavy duty replacement waiting to install when it fails, or when I replace the clutch.

For the manual transmission vehicles, from what I understand:

through 2005 - Various synchro problems(grinding gears)
2006 - Grinding fixed, now engine burns oil
2007-2009 Decent transmission, HR motor, doesn't burn oil like the 2006, Has slave cylinder issues

Is there any reason you want the Touring or the Grand Touring over the Enthusiast? I wanted the same thing, then ended up settling on the Enthusiast model after learning it has the limited slip differential. I think the only things it's lacking are leather seats and better radio compared to the Touring, and VDC(stability control), bigger wheels and brakes the Grand Touring comes with. It is a little strange that VDC isn't included on the Touring Roadster, but it is included on the Touring Coupe. Not much missing stepping down to the Enthusiast Roadster.

The standard brakes were improved I think with the 2006 model, and the brakes on my 2007 have always seemed more than adequate to me(I don't track the car).

I drive with the top down pretty much all the time, and I was initially planning to get a leather upholstery kit, but decided against it. I think the cloth is much more comfortable on a hot day.

I did get a set of Grand Touring wheels off craigslist, as my factory 18s were curb damaged. I do think the bigger wheels look better.

If I had to buy another 350Z roadster, I'd get an 07-09 Enthusiast, or the Grand Touring for the bigger wheels. I would skip the Touring all together as I wouldn't want the leather and I like aftermarket NAV over any factory system.

Not restricted to the 350Z Roadster, I'd get a 370Z Roadster with the air conditioned seats(really wish that was available on the 350Z), and a much better made interior.
