Default Cusco RS LSD – opened up (lots of pics!!)

post this in the autoX forum...but realized it's probably better served here:

Getting this installed today (too busy to do it myself)…it comes as a 2-way 100%lock, so I switched it last night to a 1.5 way, 80% lock. The manual that came with it was in all Japanese, and while I’m ½ Japanese, I don’t come close to understanding the written language…luckily there were pictures with #’s (like 100% / 80%/ 60%, or 1-way, 1.5-way, 2-way) – so it wasn’t too hard to figure out what to do.

Lock %:
The plates that have notches on the outside lock onto the housing, the plates w/ notch on the inside lock onto the gear portion. These 2 types of plates have grooved surfaces that are opposed to each other. (so by alternating them, you get the most amount of friction – 100% lock….by coupling some of the same type of plates together, you can get less friction  80% or 60%)

1, 1.5, 2 way:
The gear portion in the middle of the housing can be switched around to work as different types…it was fairly easy to look at the manual’s pictures and set it up to be a 1.5 way.

Here’s some pics (I always like to see lots of pics before I do a project...so here's all of mine!)

After opening the case, the internals just slide out.

The 2 different plates

Making sure it’s correct

Where do you go and do figure-8s for 30 minutes??

Good question...

Also, great DIY with pics!

I was aq bit worried about this, but luckily I'm running an autoX practice next saturday ...so I'll show up a bit early, do my figure-8s, then change the diff fluid.

*I know a few large empty parking lots around the Seattle area, but lately police have been cracking down really hard on street racing / drifting...I'd rather not have to mess w/ them

when properly setup up for the conditions, and the right fluid used, it is not intrusive at all actually. Mine makes 0 noise, no inside tire scrubbing, it is absolutely seamless

even if they don't specify a break-in procedure, what's the best way to drive it at the beginning? I was just going off of what most ppl had been saying for clutch type LSD's...if the 30 min figure 8s is not needed, then all the better! (I was worried that 10 minutes into it, I'd )

There is no break in needed per my conversations with Cusco. It might have to do with the springs, I am not sure...but I was happy to hear it as well! Install, drive as you normally would, then swap the fluid out in about 500 miles

Got the Z back and decided to do about 10 minutes of figure-8s and put some extra miles on it too, then I changed the diff fluid last night (super dirty!).

In all, I love this cusco LSD! Taking some familar roads, I found that I could start accelerating much sooner than I had been.

noise: At slow speeds (parking lot speed) the inside wheel can be heard skidding on tight radius'd turns, but I don't hear the LSD clutch making any extra noise...at speed, I don't hear anything extra (but my car is fairly loud as is, so it may be making noise and I'm just not hearing it )
