Widest Tire on Stock Rims
I own an 08 with factory wheels, specs as follows: 18"x8.0" front & 18"x8.5" rear. What's the widest tires I could put on these rims and be safe?
Factory sizes are 225 up front and 245 on rear..

Not really a straight answer, its actually a stupid answer. A 275 does not work well on a 8.5 inch wheel. Hell i ran 275's on 9's and the mid corner squirm sucks, and will be worse on an 8.5. Minimun width is 9.0 for a 275, and when you drive on one with that rim , you will know it sucks.
The widest is a 265, and that won't be very hot either. Buy wider wheels or just buy some sticky tires in the stock size.

Thanks guys, just curious to see if putting 265 in the rear would be kinda reckless if I'm taking quick corners hopefully the tire doesn't fly off the rim! Can't really afford the rims I want at this time so best next thing is wider sticker tire once it's time, I can't justify buying affordable rims for the mean time and reselling them later down the line..

8.5 is max 265, and you're already pushing it.
275 on 8.5 can be done for the sake of doing it, but I seriously doubt it's going to get you better traction than a well seated 255, more likely it'll be worse, not to mention slightly dangerous.
More 8.5 wheels than not (and I looked into more than I can care counting) are rated 265 max, not 265 ideal, let alone 275.
Stick to stock tyre sizes or up 10 and get better tyres if you want grip without changing wheels.
Flooring in 1st, for the record, still spins on 275 on 10" with brand new fk452 and 80% thread Yoko Advan (only shoes I tried on for now).

Do you have a pic to show for it?
I'm sincerely curious, mine came with 235 on stock 8J and I already thought it a bit pinchy. I honestly can't imagine adding another 2cm per side without it looking like somebody wrapped a kids' inflatable pool around the wheel.
I'd question the handling and feedback of that too.
