Grinding when shifting on the Z
I went to the dealership a few weeks ago to ask about the "rattling" sound on my 03 Base Z... I am not sure if it is the same sound all of you are describing, but it defiantely just started to show up...
The sound appears when I am in low the low RPM range of 1st - 4th gears.. like if I hit the gas at a low speed/ RPM in third, something rattles from underneath, near the front of the car... damn it is hard to describe!!
ANyway, I took it to Rosenthal Nissan here in Tyson's Corner, and they of course said "we couldn't replicate the sound" because it was raining out or something..
AS for grinding gears, it has happened to me only like once or twice.. once when I tried to downshift to first (I don't do that anymore!), the other when I was going into third... but like I said, it hasn't happened fo a long time.

man i hope this doesn't happen with my 05'. My budy has a crx with a swap that grinds every gear no matter what. It is a terrible feeling. You have to rip the gears into place.
I only have 500 miles on mine, so I haven't shifted hard yet, but I did notice that sometimes I have to really give it a tug to get it into 2nd gear. It seems to want to stick. Hopefully this will go away as I break it in.
BTW-for those who have grinding trannies, is it mostly when you try to shift at redline, or just while normal driving?

Weird...drove it around all day today and didn't shift rough once...I'm starting to think this tranny isn't even broken in yet at 1500 miles...I'm just paranoid!
To answer the above question though, my rough 1>2 was at low speed. My understanding was that the synchros have more opportunity to mesh at higher rpm.

Im at around 2400 miles on my '04 Z. I have already taken it to the Dealer about this issue. Every so often, its very random tho, I cant get into 3rd. (its like theres a wall blocking from getting into gear) But the funny thing is, it always happens at the worst moments, like the on ramp to the highway, or up hill, or something on those lines.
When i brought it to the dealer, The Service Rep. said he'd have the Mech take it to lunch (normal driving). Left it there over night, and he told me that they couldnt replicate the issue, therfor nothing was fixed. (I think the syncros are shot) Its pissing me off cause, now im noticing when i go from Nuetral to 1st the stick feels like its rubbing against a rocks on the left hand side of the shift box.
Also not sure if anyone else has heard this, but every so often when the windows are open i can hear a metal clank sound when the gear engages..

I hear about all these problems on Z's but mine has 28K miles on it and was built in 12/02 and the only problem I have with mine is the streak on the window. I guess I just lucked out.
Yeah.. thats the sound I talked about... a metal clanking when shifting into gear... like the engine is sort of "grunting" to produce power in the low RPMs, the clanking happens for a few seconds until the RPMs increase, then it goes away.
THe shift into third was also as you described: it felt like something was blocking it from shifting, and when I forced it, it ground like no other...

the clicking when at low rpms is the axle splines or something like that. they either regrease them or replace them and grease them up.

My main gripe is the grinding of the gears. I am embarrased when I shift on my Z. My Z grinds from 1st - 2nd, 2nd - 3rd and also 3rd - 4th(occasionally). Do you know what could be the problem. This is not what a true sports car should feel like. I even feel like trading in my Z
. Any ideas?
