Except a Turbo still involves a bottom-end buildup. Some people here are lucky and run low boost, but the tinker-toy rods on the Z are just waiting to shred the block.

 

Ls1 motors can be found real cheap, people are starting to swap them in e36 bmw's. I heard you can get a low mileage ls1 motor with ecu for $1400, not to mention they seem to weigh less than the bmw straight 6's, not sure what our 3.5 weighs though??

 

How much to install the motor after it's all said and done?

Wow.. $1400 sounds way low, but if that is accurate, and you could do the swap for under $4k- you're looking at $5400 for an LS1 350Z.

Seems to cheap, but what if you could do the whole swap for under $6k... would that be worth it?

PS- you're only going to have between 290 and 310rwhp with out modding the ls1 engine.

 

i'm pretty sure it's possible...
of course, you gas mileage will be about 5miles to the gallon, so it wouldn't be practical.

 

I traded in a 2000 Ws6 Trans Am on my Z. I dynoed stock 308 rwhp, 321 rwtq. With a cam/ heads swap and long tube headers you can get very close to 400 rwhp. I wouldn't think the Ls1 motor would be much heavier then the Z's V6 as it is all aluminum. As for gas mileage, I averaged 21 mpg with my T/A 6mt. Weight wise, the Z is about 250 lbs lighter than my T/A was.

Why do you think the MPG would be so low? C5's get better mileage than I do now. Drop in the LS1, upgrade the fuel system and you should have a fun ride.

Yeah I think so too. If I had the option of going TT or swapping to the LS1 for the same $$ I would go with the Vette motor. I don't care that it would make the Z a bastard. It would be a reliable fast bastard.

Well, with no budget, I would keep the VQ and build it and get TT. LS1 would be much cheaper to tune and mod. Wouldn't be as impressive but I would still enjoy it. Maybe someone will do it soon and start an unpopular trend

 

I 2nd this suggestion. Get it up near 300 N/A and spray the rest of the way.
