Default OK lame question

I´m ready to buy the Z, just placed the order for a new 2005 BD Enth MT. Now the question is ( for those of you with Property tax), when am I suppose to pay the property tax?

1. At the end of the year?

2. When you buy the car and want to register it for the first time?. I don´t want to be surprised to release $900 over the OTD price.

Thanks much guys happy holidays! to yall!.

You pay taxes when you purchase the car (sales tax) and when you register it (and subsequent registrations). At least here, but I believe that's about how it works everywhere.

yeah, i think you're talking about sales tax. i know there's a luxury tax on vehicles over 30k, but it's minimal. if you're financing the car, your tax should be included in the loan.

Well, you pay a "property tax" on your car as well, but it's worked into registration. If you drive a $10,000 car you will pay less to register it (renewal), than if you drive a $30,000 car. I believe that's the tax he's talking about. You probably wouldn't realize this unless you have more than one car.

Not Positive, but is'nt that called an intangible property tax?

In Virginia you pay an annual personal property tax based on the assessed value of the vehicle.

Thanks so much for the responses...but do you pay that after year 1 or when you register the car?.. we are talking around $900 per year..then it decreases as you put miles on the car. I think that in SC it´s maxed to $300.

You will be sent a bill that you can pay for 6 months or 1 year renewal...or at least you are in VA. Once you pay it, you will be given a "paid" sticker for the winshield.

In georgia, what you are referring to is called 'ad velorum' tax, and it is not paid when you initially buy the car, but every year thereafter when you renew registration. I'm pretty sure its that way in south carolina too. You will pay sales tax when you get it, and the ad-velorum property tax every year thereafter. Thats why its best to buy right after your birthday. (if your state runs registrations based on birthdays)

In South Carolina, you pay sales tax at the time of purchase. This is a maximum of $300, and can be rolled into the car loan or paid seperately. You also pay personal property tax based on the value of the car. This is paid when you register the car. You must pay the property taxes before you will receive a tag. The only exception I know of is if you are transfering a tag from a previous vehicle that has been traded or sold. Then, you will not have to pay property taxes on the Z until the tag expires. You must go to the DMV to have the tag officially transfered to the new vehicle within 45 days of purchase.

I know you pay property taxes on leases. Its optional for the city or county to do so, but shoot, like they would pass up $$.
