if you change your own oil and that it will not cause your light to come on unless you messed something up.

You have to use a special "tool". Using this software and hardware you can reset your CEL and any error codes associated with it. It's a full diagnostic software also.

in that case, no there is not. the SEL only comes on if the computer throws an error code or something is wrong with the car.

take it to a dealer to have them check it out. Did you recently installed a new CAI or some other mods? Since you are in LA, I would recommend Performance Nissan at Duarte.

Or you can invest in a OBD II code scanner (about $150 or so) and find out what the SEL is about

i think what he was asking is that some cars, when the odometer reads a specific mileage, it sets off a light reminding you to change your oil. this light happens to be the same light if you have problems with the car (service engine light). i know on a GM car you can reset it by pressing a reset button they have inside the fusebox. the Z does not have a feature like this so there is no light to reset. Now if you do have your light on, something may be wrong and then the code scanners mentioned, or going to autozone, or just going to the dealer will find out what is wrong and can reset it.

If you feel you have the ability to repair it yourself then it is definitly worth it to buy the OBDII code scanner. Most dealers will charge you an arm and a leg to turn off a light even if it was a false alarm.
