Default Trunk isn't staying up

Al right well the search is still messed up so I can't find the thread about this. I remember reading something similiar. What's the deal with this? Anyone else experience? Do I need new trunk shocks already? Do I just go to the dealer and have them fix it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

do you have a spoiler?

i have the nismo spoiler, and i have to pop the trunk twice to open it, and then soemtimes it doesnt stay up w/ the shocks. theres an added weight in the trunk lid that you can take out, its under the plastic panel on the inside of the trunklid, that should help in keeping it up

Do you have an aftermarket spoiler on your trunk? I don't think I have seen any threads on this other than extra spoiler weight causing issues, but the search works fine for me. It searches all the way back to 2002 posts just fine.

I had a similar problem with my trunk, which popped up fine when I first bought it, but not after it had been fixed after an accident. It's possible the body shop used the wrong spec trunk latch spring, but I'm not sure that they'd had to restore that part. I brought it to my dealer and they installed the stronger spring without a fuss. So maybe even the "good" ones do get weak over time. What year's your Fairlady?

I had my trunk struts replaced under warranty. I had the same problem. I have an aftermarket spoiler but I didn't start experiencing the problem until the weather got colder. The dealership told me that it had something to do with the valves getting stuck in the open position when it's cold. I haven't had a problem with that since they replaced the struts. (knock on wood)

The weather may have something to do with it. I have 2 other hatchbacks and the hatch on all of them all seem to have trouble staying up when its really cold outside. Ive had my hatch fall on my head several times.

Yeah it seems it may be a weather thing. It was fareecing this morning and last night. I'll try it in a few. I also have to click the button more than once to open it like mdacko was saying. There is a stock spoiler on there, can't imagine how bad it's going to be if I add something more. It really seems like the shocks have gone out.

SEARCH function is not 100% accurate. Someone had the exact same problem and I can't find it now. There are plenty of threads on this in the bug report section, I think it just depends on if your looking for something exact.

Thanks for the help guys!

There is a TSB for the hatch lock not releasing all the way. Apparently the stock trunk shocks are not powerful enough. If you have the problem they will replace the trunk shocks with new springs.

My trunk needs 2 pushes of the button to open it. The shocks aren't very strong either, if the hatch has even a little bit of snow on it then it won't stay open. From what I've heard (from others on this forum), Nissan should fix this under warranty.

Just to clarify this, there is a TSB out for the springs in the black plastic casings on the sides of the hatch. You can pop these off, pull the springs out, put a couple of pennies in each side, and reassemble. It will have the exact same effect as the TSB....longer springs. The struts will only be replaced under warranty if they are in-fact blown out.

LOL, the hatch fell on my head a couple of times too. It only happens when it's really cold.

ha ha....The worst part when that happens (my car does it too, in a big way with the Vizage spoiler on the hatch) is when the metal latch hits you in the back....Ouch!

I aprreciate the offer but to spend over $200 to fix a problem that I should not have to fix.......

no thanks.

BTW - I have the shock problem and the double tap of the remote to open problem as well. (sometimes I want to double tap some of nissan's designers! j/k)

and for those that do not know, that is a mafia term.....
