Are Shift Lights Needed with 6 Speed?
What if you cannot hear your engine revving - or in a racing situation, cannot easily discern your engine from the other revving engines around you? There have been times on the road when I cannot gauge my engine revs because I've got a CD blasting away. If I forget that I am in third gear instead of fourth, a blinking light catches my attention - the tach might not (just a scenario - this hasn't happened to me yet). To me, it is a safety net that I used to stay under 4K for break-in, one that I can use now for those times when I cannot hear the engine revving. I don't use it for every day driving - but I am thankful that it is there to protect my engine in unforeseen circumstances.
These folks also make the statement that if you have to take your eyes off the road to shift, then you need an automatic. If that is the case, then forget the shift light - why do we even need a tachometer? Duh! Pointless argument supporting seat-of-the-pants driving. If you're given the tools, you find ways to make use of them.
