Default Chrome bolt kit for your engine, REAL OEM Bolts :)

Hello all...
We are going to offer soon a fully chromed bolt/nut kit for the engine bay of the Z. This won't be like other kits out there that are just polished harware from Home Depot or anything, these will all be factory OEM bolts etc... and chrome plated. So you get factory fit and finish, and a nice show look.
I already did one kit for myself, and had other parts chromed as well, but here is a sample pic from my kit:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v206/t...meboltsbag.jpg

I have some other things in that pic that were some added stuff that i had done, and just threw em in the pic just for show.

The kit so far is going to include pretty much all visable bolts in the bay, including the bolts holding the fenders, headlights, upper plenum, throttle body, strut bar bolts, etc...
Get rid of those ugly army green bolts

not sure of pricing yet, But it will be decent, especially for factory stuff.

of course this is all bling bling, and for show, no performance...
I'll have more pics in two weeks when i get my car back and everything done.

my experience is the factory bolts break all the time.

I've broken about 4 or 5

they don't break unless you put undue stress on them.
i've not broken one on my car yet...

I'm certainly in if the price isn't too ridiculous.

I assume then that these will just be carbon steel pieces, not a higher strength stainless fastener.

why do you need higher strength?
there's no reason for it.
the stock bolts hold just fine, even in full race cars. I don't see the point of swapping out to stainless different grade bolts, they don't look nice, and they do the same job.....

...until you break one

seriously a lot of people have broke some of their bolts even without much force - sometimes just trying to take them out they'll break. And that's without that bolt ever being touched since the car was built

To me, that seems like half the reason for bothering to change them out in the first place

If anything it will be more since they are having someone chrome bolts. They have the polished ones for $99, but I cant see any difference between the polished or the SS for $79.

Wouldnt tightening the bolts scratch the surface of the chrome?

That kit is very cheap to buy, because you can get all those parts in a hardware store. Those are not polished afterwards either, that's how the bolts come.

on the kit i'm going to put together, it's all factory pieces, and chromed, not polished. so yes, it will be more than the $79, but you are not paying for the same thing. It's apples to oranges comparing the two, it's not even in the same league....

no, so long as you do not overtorque the bolts they will hold up.

I would like to set the record straight.

The polished bolt kit from Courtesy referenced above is most definitely polished. Since I sit at a buffing wheel with a stainless polish compound and buff each stainless bolt head and every large washer or nut I would know. Then each is cleaned and a hand polished using a fine jewelry cleaner.

I developed the kit using stainless steel 18-8 bolts (not from home depot) to get the best product I could. The body bolts are very expensive since they are flange bolts and can not be found at a hardware store. Stainless is an alloy of steel with high corrosion resistance and is the material of choice for exterior and most marine applications.

I like chrome as well, but had bad luck with chipping, cracking and rusting. I wish you luck on your new kit. If done well it should be a good seller, but please don’t bad mouth someone else’s product just to try a sell your own.

I just took my off and ran them to my local chrome plater, they are charging me $3.00 per each piece. That was like a $120.00
I a`m trying to keep My Z as original as I can. But this could be a good deal, to late for me though.

our price should be right around or below that $120 price, and this way you are getting a whole set of bolts, and not have to take all yours off....

You obviously haven't looked at either HD or the local hardware for metric stainless fasteners. You'll be lucky to find just one size that would fit the Z. I even tried the largest local warehouse but they didn't have hardly anything that would fit on the Z, they would need to order 90% of the necessary pieces.

Ah, yeah that's true, Home depot and Lowes etc... won't have them. but out here in so cali, there are tos of hardware stores that do, in hand and in stock.
out in riverside and corona area there are two alone.
Anyway, I didn't want to diss the other kits, as they do their job and are much shinier than stock for sure......
Just another option

Tony,

If you had come out with this 4 months ago, I probably would have gotten it rather than go the polished SS route.

One thing that concerns me that others have already mentioned - scratching and marring the finish. While I can be real careful with them on my car, I worry about what happens when I have to bring it to the dealer or a shop. Those guys aren't going to handle them with kid gloves. It's not like the local Harley shop where they're used to working with highly polished and chromed pieces. Just something for people to keep in mind when considering this type of "mod".

Most bolts that are chrome plated, hold up very well. I use to build alot of setups with chromed bolts and peices, and as long as you have a good plater and are a little carefull installing them and not over torgue them, the parts will hold up very well. Just my 2 cents.
