Unhappy Grinding Into 3rd

I bought mine used with 26k already on it. Its an early '03. I've had it for just over a month. Almost immediately I noticed that it sometimes grinds into 3rd gear. It doesn't happen very often but often enough to be annoying. At first I was more interested in speeding away from whoever saw me do it but after I decided to start paying attention I can honestly say that it has nothing to do with how far the clutch is depressed.

Is this a common problem? Have any of you had any experience with this? I got it from a Nissan dealer with the gold extended warranty plan but I don't really know what to tell them when I call this one in. It doesn't happen often enough for me to just show it to them.

I also have some oil streaks on the windows. Whats going on there?

Its still an amazing piece of machinery and I plan on driving it 'til the wheels fall off.

Hi...if you search the forums you'll find a ton of info pertaining to your problems.......as for the 3rd grinding issue, it IS a known problem in our cars...actually happened to me last month...i have an 03 Touring with 30,000 miles which I bought used, but my 3rd gear grinding was insane...it'd happen every morning no matter how long I warmed the car up...my suggestion would be to wait until the grinding is consistent enough for you to reproduce to your dealer...I also have the Gold extended warranty plan...depending on how nice your dealer is directly proportional to how much you'll have to b*tch to him about fixing your car under warranty. If the dealer acknowledges your problem, in about a week you will get a brand new transmission, clutch disc and pad and clutch assembly all under warranty .

That is a factory problem for sure.
Make sure your dealer takes care of you!

by grind, do you mean a slight "crunch" in shifter feedback or a horrible noise going into gear?

I'm going to bet it's the grind. I just bought an '03 touring which started grinding on me in 3rd gear. Soooo,,, I followed up on it by informing them about the number of problems Nissan had with those trannies and let them check the car out for themselves a couple of days ago.

Now I'm just waiting on the new transmission to arrive. It should arrive in the next week, and I will drop the car back off to get it fixed under warranty.

Mine is doing it once in a blue moon, mostly going back to third from 4th (City driving)... Early 03, 24K miles.

I wish it was doing it more already so I can it over with and go get it replaced... :/

Guys,

I have the same problem. How long is our tranny warranty for? Anybody have an answer?

When it is cold, 2nd gear would hear a clunk.

Shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, i have a "teeth" grinding. Doesn't happen all the time. But when I shift from 2nd to 3rd gear and take a split second pause in netural it would never happen.

I have driven manual for 15years, and this tranny is not the same.
