Default Color Mismatch

After sitting at the dealer for two weeks, I finally got to go pick up my Daytona Blue Z.

However, my biggest disappointment was the huge amount of orange peel. Also, most surprisingly, the color of the bumpers, mirrors, gas cover, and the rest of the car do not match. Its like the car is three different colors.

Does anyone else see this on their Daytona Blue Z?

Default Daytona Blue

I visited a dealer in Beaverton, Oregon yesterday and he was preparing a Daytona Blue Z for delivery. We both noticed that the gas cover was a different color blue, depending on the angle you viewed it. From one perspective, you couldn't see it and from another view you could.

I didn't notice anything different about the bumpers. There was a picture of a Blue Daytona on this forum a month or more ago, where you could see the slight difference in the gas cover. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The Blue is such an awesome color, I don't think most people will even see it

I have a Daytona Blue Performance model and I have noticed that the gas cover and bumpers are a different shade of blue. What I would like to know is why? Are the pieces painted using different methods, or are they painted at different times? Anyhow, the orange peel is VERY evident on my Daytona Blue but it hasnt taken too much away from the experience. I am still contemplating taking it to my dealer as a warranty item but I wouldnt really want a repaint........I guess I have to live with it...such is life!

If you take a close look at the bumpers in bright sunlight, you can see a slightly different shade on almost all colors.. A friend in the auto body business for over 30 years expalined it's almost impossable to get the exact same color shade on the skin of the bumper. My guess is since it's not metal, the paint just appears different.. The mirrors are the same but I'm puzzled about the gas lid.. It is metal isn't it?? Anyone else have any other ideas??

The gas lid is actually the same plastic used on the bumpers. I originally thought the reason for the different shade of color on the gas lid and bumpers were because they are plastic and the rest is metal (the hood is aluminum), but it still puzzles me why.

they might have to use a different primer for plastic and metal and that is causing the discoloration.. just a thought

I have closely followed the orange peel posts since my car has an excessive amount of it. Judging by the posts that I have scanned, the Daytona Blue seems to be the color that has the highest percentage of bad cases of peel.

The color mismatch on the plastic and metal pieces does not bother me as much as the peel.

When I got mine yesterday, I noticed the gas cap is a slightly different color, but my old Jetta had the same issue, so I didn't really care. It may also be a product of the curvature of the gas cap. I suspect the gap in between the edge of the cap and the surrounding body work may act as a sort of optical illusion. Otherwise, the color is definitely consistent all over. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. No orange peel either, from what I could tell.

Seems to be a common thing for DB. Read the previous thread I started last week.
