then there was when i got a friend to tow my alfa gtv6 home behind his pickup on a 2 wheel dolly - parked on hill in front of house and released the car from the dolly 
.... hit about 20 mph rolling backwards down hill before i made it in and yanked e brake... about 20 feet from busy intersection, not sure if the insurance folks would have understood...
got a standing O from the neighbors though...
anyone
else crunch something in front of them? sixth can feel like reverse... i tagged a ten speed... no damage to 'precious' however....

I used to put it in neutral and use the hand brake. Till one day when it was raining and I jumped out of the car without pulling it, car rolled back into a fence, got there just a half second too late. no dents, but some scratches.
now its 1st gear and hand brake.
and to the guy on the first page whos an idiot, dude, youre an idiot. I would refuse to pay for it if I was nissan as well. They didnt do anything wrong.

i did the same thing as the guy on the first page, i never leave the car in gear so when i picked it up from the shop the guy wanted me to start it, i never even got in the car just stuck my right foot on the clutch and turned the key
the guy at the shop said he had been hit another time when someone did the same thing....seems to me im not the idiot
it is clearly an issue so if you want to do it in your car that's up to you but when your driving someone elses car your you better leave it in nutral if you found it that way
like if i put a loaded clip in someone elses gun and then put it away and then he fires a round through the wall. yea he should have cleared it but i shouldn't have left it that way either

You should always push in the clutch and check see if you are in gear before starting a MT....thats common knowledge. You should always leave your car in gear and never rely on a hand brake to keep your car from rolling.
As with guns...you should always assume its loaded and clear it before handling it if that is the case. A lot of people are killed by "unloaded" guns!!!

I always:
That is always my routine with manuals.
- Turn off the lights.
- Put it in neutral.
- Turn off the engine.
- Pull up on the parking brake.
- With the clutch in, put car into First gear.
- Get out of the car.

2. Apply hand brake with car in neutral.
3. Feel the parking brake "grab".
4. Put car in 1st or reverse.
5. Place chocks under wheels.
6. Set out orange cones at each corner.

Glad (well, not glad) to hear the poor e-brake isn't just my car. I got stopped in a line going out of a parking garage on a steep incline and of course someone pulled up right behind me in an SUV. I tried to use just my e-brake and let the clutch catch with a wee bit of gas before slowly letting off the e-brake and giving it more gas. My car slid back a little bit and it startled the hell out of me.

My ex-wife once parked her (Renault) manual transmission in a church parking lot and only set the handbrake.
After church, 200+ folks witnessed that the Renault had rolled down the hill and totalled a new Mercedes.

I know that probably the most correct and safe way in any car is to set the brake and leave it in gear but my last car I owned for 10+ years I never used anything but the brake unless I parked on a steep driveway. Don't rely on the brake for your Z! I guess my advice is to come to a stop, set the handbrake fully, shut off the car, let go of the brake pedal to let the drum pads catch (they have TONS of slop), then put it in 1st if parking uphill or put in in reverse if parking downhill. I think that allowing the drum brakes to catch at the end of their slop will help take any load off of the gears and the gearbox will catch if the brake fails. My two cents.
Seriously though you will want to form some kind of habit like this after you figure out how bad the brake works. Man I hate leaving my car in gear. Plus it was hard to break 16 years of habits but I'm used to it after 2 months. I still am surprised everytime I come back and see my car still parked where I left it.
