A girl I work with was told recently that her car did not come with clear coat on the paint. I believe it's a mid 90's mazda.

I remember my local Nissan dealership tacks on $1,250 bucks to every car calling it a "Protection Package". They said it's for Undercoating, paint protectant, interior something, and overall sounded like a bunch of crap to me.

After hearing her story (they're getting their car repainted) I was wondering what the chances are of cars today not coming without clear coats.

I've heard somewhere that you dont want them to do any undercoating to the Z because it'll plug up something underneath.

I may be buying a 2nd car (maybe a sentra) as a beater and I was curious as to what you all have run into with dealer addons.

 

Most, if not all, cars come with clearcoat nowadays. I'm willing to bet even her mid-90's Miata did.

 

As a general rule of thumb, don't do dealer add-on's. They are not worth the price, and if it's really somthing you want, you can do it yourself.

 

BS - it's a simple profit center for the dealer. Don't want them. Don't pay for them.

Leather seats - no Scotchguard.
No snow - no undercoating.
Clearcoat - from the factory.
