Modified 350Z's being sold for WAY too much for what they are???
I am about sick of it...to start...the owner must realize when you modify a car...you make it LESS reliable, not more. Also the owner should realize as soon as you drive it off the lot...the value depreciates ~5-10k depending on what car it is and what trim it is. Thirdly...you NEVER get back what you put into it. And you will certainly NOT get MORE than you put into it. That's the way the industry works...
Take it to a dealer and try to sell it for $10k over what you paid for it when you bought it new...you won't get their time of day...why? Because they KNOW that a modded car is harder to resell due to being less reliable. So why should you ask a private buyer for 10+k more when the dealer sure as hell isn't going to pay it?
There is a silverstone 350Z ('04) on ebay right now. Carrillo rods (not sure if it's a-beam or h-beam), Power Enterprise tt kit, nismo lsd, etc....BUY IT NOW FOR 55,000....are you insane? Sorry if the owner is on here...I just think it's ridiculous.
Here's the way I see it...$5k off from buying price from when you drove it off the lot...and take off 3-7k depending on how many mods. If it's more than that...it's just not worth it and shouldn't sell (if it does sell you are very lucky).
Sorry for the rant...this has just pissed me off recently and wanted to give some info to the community.
Bottom line: used cars are simply that...and should not be marked for more than what you paid.

You've got a valid point. Somebody that devotes a lot of time and effort into customizing their car feels they have something really special and they're looking to get as much as possible back out of it. Unfortunately they don't realize that finding a buyer who recognizes the same is almost impossible. It's not like these are rare, hard-to-find cars.
Most sellers follow the conventional wisdom and remove the mods and sell them separately, restore the car to stock and try to get fair market value.

If we let everything go we wouldn't have many discussions.
I agree! I responded to this one post where the seller had this TT modded out Z, nice car and all, but he was askin' for quite a bit and I told him exactly what u said just as a comment. Told him it's prolly easier to sell if return it to stock and sell his mods and he gets all defensive like a ***** and tells me to get out of his thread, geeez, wat's the big deal lol.
But I guess in the same time we can't totally blame ppl for tryin' to sell there cars w/ modded parts for an extremely high price since everyone who mods their cars expect some compensation for the money they invested into it. But they should really be realistic about their prices sometimes b4 they start posting a modded Z sold for 50k. U see it on eBay so much, ppl would just literally add the car's kbb price + mod cost + mod labor, then u get this super expensive car which is all tricked out, but twice the car's original price lmao. Not to mention modded cars usually give buyers speculation that the car might of been used severly for racing/track etc since it's modded, thus the reliable cocnern as discussed.

What if the car is modified with Nismo wheels and other upgrades installed from the dealer? Would that increase the price or would it lower the value of the car if sold used.
It seems the dealership would give you less on a trade in, but sell it to someone for more using the aftermarket accesories as a selling point.

Common sense would tell me that car should be woth more a few years down the line when whoever bought it decides to trade it back in. But what do I really know?
turns out that rims these days do INCREASE the resale of your car..but this is just recent....I have traded in two sep cars with rims and they have been giving me more then asking price.... so..... you have a very valid point.... h/e there might be a little sway in the trends
rims are a totally different issue than a modded-engine. In the real world, rims = general appeal and value; mod engines = unrealible car that has been driven hard, 99% of the time. Thus rims add a few bucks to the resale price, but not that many dollars really (maybe fetches a few hundred dollars, not even the cost of one rim, typically), raced-out engine actually lowers the resale price. Pretty simple formula really.
Hey, but there is a sucker born every minute.

There are too many variables that go into this. Some modifications will raise the price of a car if sold to the correct person. Obviously joe schmo off the street doesn't care what is done to the car, but if you find that enthusiast that understands the time and money you put in, then the mods are worth something. For instance I had a 92 Civic Si hatch I bought for $3,800. I spent over $10,000 on it by the time I was done including an engine swap of course. Well I ended up selling it 2 years later for $8000. Now obviously joe schmo would go to KBB and it would say the car is worth $2000, but an enthusiast knows the car is worth far more.
While I agree a lot of people ask too much for their cars, you cant blame them for trying. If they sell, great for them! Theres always some rich guy out there who might want your specific car, and the price tag doesnt matter so much. (or, more specifically, some rich guys kid.. lol). I personally probably wouldnt buy a pre-modded car though, just because I know the last guy tore it up.
Oh, and as far as twin turbos and stuff... you have to keep in mind that when you're building a car like that, its going to sit in shops for god knows how long as they build the bottom end and what not. Where as by buying it all done, you dont have that hassle.. only maintaining the original work. If someone actually wants a TT'd Z, they would probably pay an extra 8-10K for the car, knowing that if they did it themself, they'd spend closer to 15-20k by the time they were done. That way, even though its used, they got the mods for half price. Just food for thought.
